ANNA REDLICH Obituary

Anna Rose Redlich, nee Julian, 89, cherished wife of William Redlich, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2011, at the Northshore University Health System Hospice in Evanston, IL; Ann was the loving mother and mother-in-law of Susan Redlich of Cambridge, MA; Cathy Redlich and Rob Horwitz of Ancramdale, NY; and Jim Redlich and Myra Epping of Chicago. She was also a grandmother who delighted in the adventures and achievements of her five granddaughters, Amanda Epping Redlich of Highland Park, NJ; Margaret Epping Redlich of Chicago; Jane Redlich Horwitz of Chicago; Elizabeth Rose Redlich of Cambridge, MA; and Grace Redlich Horwitz of Ancramdale, NY. Ann was born on Nov. 10, 1921 in Danville, IL to Hazel Dell Thompson and William Julian; she was preceded in death by her older brother, Wayne; and is survived by her sister Alice Wake, as well as eight nieces; and nephews. For over thirty years, Ann has also been the honorary "mother" and eventually "grandmother" to the extended Tang family of Chicago and Los Angeles, refugees from Cambodia whom Ann and Bill assisted in establishing new lives in the United States. Ann graduated from Danville High School in 1939, attended Purdue University (where she met Bill) from 1939-41, and received her RN Degree in 1944 from the Cook County Hospital School of Nursing, where she was class president. Ann and Bill were married in Oct. 1944, just before Bill, a U.S. Army Air Corps officer, left for the South Pacific. During the course of their 66 year marriage, the Redlichs lived in Winnetka, IL, until moving in 2002 to Westminster Place in Evanston. All who encountered Ann felt blessed to know her generosity of spirit, her modesty and kindness, her tireless efforts on behalf of those less privileged, her community and school involvement, and her appreciation of music and the natural world were inspiring. Among her many passions were Girl Scouting, in which she volunteered as a troop leader for over a decade and served on the Wilmette Girl Scout Council; the Northfield Community Church, where she taught Sunday School, was a member of the Church Council, and was ultimately honored for her extraordinary commitment to the church's partnership with the Good News Community Soup Kitchen in Chicago; the American Field Service exchange student program, where she served as Regional Director; and Avoca School in Wilmette, where she volunteered in virtually every capacity known to moms while her three children made their way from K-8. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2011, at 2 p.m. at the Elliott Chapel, Westminster Place, 3200 Grant Street, Evanston, IL, with a reception to follow. Memorial contributions may be made to Girl Scouts USA on-line at http://www.girlscouts.org/support/ or by mail to Fund Development, P.O. Box 19611A, Newark, NJ 07195-0611; or to The Nature Conservancy on-line at http://my.nature.org/donate/. Arrangements by Cremation Society of Illinois, 773-281-5058. www.creamation-society.com

To this day I am still influenced by my experience in Mrs. Redlich´s Girl Scout Troop 88. She and Mrs. Hamilton and the other leaders helped chart a positive course for the lives of all the girls in the Troop. Sixty years later I still feel gratitude and indebtedness.

I have many fond memories of my Girl Scout years with Mrs. Redlich as my leader.....way back in the late 1950's. From camping, cooking Girl Scout stew in her backyard, to selling cookies to planting tulip bulbs in front of Avoca, she was always there with her kind, calm encouragement. She will always be an inspiration to me. I was saddened to learn of her passing. Judy Hicks Thom ([email protected])

I am so sorry to hear of Ann's passing. I knew her mostly as a result of her tireless AFS (American Field Service) work in the 1970s at New Trier West. She was a kind and generous woman who always had a smile and a can-do attitude no matter the frustrations and "surprises" an endeavor handed her. She was, and has been, a role model for grace-under-pressure for all of us, and a woman who I greatly admired. Please accept my sympathy, Bill, on your loss. I will be keeping you in my thoughts in the coming days and weeks.

I was very blessed to have Grandmother Ann in my life. She was the perfect and ideal grandmother any grandchildren could ever dream of. Her kindness, generosity and warmthness in her heart, as well as Grandpa Bill has made us (Tang / Cheng Family) who we are today. The love and support from the Redlich family has made such a positive impact on all of us and we will continue to love and cherish them forever.

It is hard to know where to begin. Aunt Ann was a big part of my life and in many ways a second mother, just as Uncle Bill is a second father.

All the memories of family gatherings, holidays, summer at Twin Lakes.

I feel blessed to be part of a family that was/is as close as ours.

Aunt Ann is now at rest and in a better place. I know that she is with Grandma and Grandpa Redlich, with her parents and with my mother and father.

They are all playing bridge.
