I am saddened by your loss. I remembered they took me in while venturing far from home because I wanted to be a part of their family and ski on the holiday.

If I may venture to add a note as one who knew Mr. Gard by reputation only, I hope his family will find it appropriate to include a message in the Guest Book that mentions his contributions to the game of soccer in his adopted country. Mr Gard is a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame, a winner of national honors during his playing career, and was the reserve goalkeeper for the U.S. national team for the 1950 World Cup in Brazil. In that tournament, of course, the U.S. scored one of the epic upsets in soccer history, beating England 1-0.

My son and I happened to be visiting Walter Bahr, the captain of that team, today in Boalsburg, Pennsylvania. Coach Bahr's wife, Davies, told us that Mr Gard had passed away; the Bahrs were clearly saddened by the loss of their old friend. As the U.S. approaches another World Cup match against England, this June, those of us who love the game will mourn the absence of Mr Gard from the audience, and will be thankful to him for his contributions to the game in our country.

I hope that Mr Gard's family will accept these condolences, and find some solace in a lifetime of memories.

Dear Mrs.Gard, Gary, Helen, & Danny,
We are sorry for the loss of your devoted husband, a loving dad and grandad. I will always remember him as silent and strong, but most of all how playful he was with Anna when she sat with him.
