ROBERT TROOST Obituary

Robert "Bob" Troost, 73, of Oak Brook, IL, beloved husband of 42 years to Dorothy; cherished father of Neil (Melissa), Julie (Jeremiah) Troost Geiman, Dawn, Scott; fond brother to Peter, the late Richard, Romayne (Ted) Kazmer, Frank (Pat), Susan (Roger) Rhodes; loving grandfather to Emma and Mattea. An accomplished cemeterian for 46 years who strongly believed in the value of his profession, he was passionate about serving people during the most difficult time in their lives. Bob established the largest group of independently-owned cemeteries in the Chicagoland area. Yet he always said, "I don't live to work, I work to live." Always a playful spirit, Bob loved hiking through the canyons of Utah, exploring the high-mountain passes of Colorado to venture above the tree-line, reading under an umbrella on a Florida beach, racing Vipers around the track, playing tennis weekly, hiding eggs on Easter for kids of all ages, avidly studying Civil War history, driving countless miles on road trips throughout the country, cruising the strips of the Western suburbs in a classic car, venturing through our National Parks, fishing the lakes of Canada with his sons and traveling the world with his wife and family. He grew to love plants and trees and nurtured many at his cemeteries and home. Bob served on the Board of Directors of the Cemeteries Association of Greater Chicago for over 20 years and was President from 1982 to 1983. He was also a member and past President of the Metropolitan Chicago Cemetery Officials. Member of the International Cemetery, Cremation and Funeral Association and the Illinois Cemetery and Funeral Home Association for over 30 years. Parishioner of St. Mary of Gostyn Catholic Church in Downers Grove for 39 years, original member of the Dodge Viper Club of Illinois, member of the Chicago Rolls-Royce Owners' Club, Buick Riviera Owners' Association and Salt Creek Civil War Round Table. His family remains in awe of his strength and courage that shined its brightest during his greatest trial, battling pancreatic cancer. Never asking "why me?" he bore this wretched cross with amazing dignity. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, 2141 Rosecrans Ave., Suite 7000, El Segundo, CA, 90245, please note on check: Robert Troost Memorial Fund for Research. Visitation Thursday, 3 to 9 p.m., Toon Funeral Home, 4920 Main Street, Downers Grove, 630-968-0408. Funeral, Friday 10 a.m., St. Mary of Gostyn Catholic Church, 444 Wilson Street, Downers Grove. Interment: Clarendon Hills Cemetery, Darien. www.toonfuneralhome.com or 630-968-0408.

To the Robert Troost Family, I've been friends with the Troost guys for over fifty years. It was Bob's prompting that got me to attend Western New Mexico Univ. After my wife died, in terms of life, marriage, or simply having had a friend, Dr. Suess said it well:"Don't cry
because it's over, smile because it happened."

I only worked for Bob part time for a short time and met him a few times. He struck me as a down to earth person. I send my condolensces and know he will not be forgotten. The key to immorality is living a life worth remembering and I am sure he did.

Please let me extend my condolences over your loss. I was a kid the last time I saw Bob and the rest of the Troosts. It's been 55 years since we moved away from the neighborhood and the house my parents built around the corner at Highview and Montclair. Of all the great kids in the neighborhood, the Fosters, Youngs, the older guys, the Healys, Trongeaus and the Troosts. Bob was a true leader and without doubt the funniest kid I ever knew. I know how wonderful he has been with the family business. Why not! He was the best! Our thoughts are with all of you I knew best, Pete, Romane, Frank, and everyone else in the family.

I will miss my tennis games with Bob and the wonderful hikes we did at Red Rock Canyon and Mt. Charleston.
