Just read about Jack Simmerling's death in the "Notre Dame" magazine. I used to love to visit his wonderful Gallery and I do have his book "Chicago Homes".
plus a lithograph of Notre Dame's campus The Gallery was a place of peace and beauty in Beverly and I will always remember Jack's kind face. How I wish I had told him then how much he and the Gallery meant to me. I like to think he knew.
Gone but not forgotten, just like the beautiful homes he wrote about. My condolences to his family.

My sincere condolences to the family of Mr. Simmerling. We moved to Beverly in 1973; the Heritage Gallery, at that time on 111th Street, was ( and continues) to be the place I always brought my artwork for beautiful framing Mr.Simmerling had a very special gift, an "eye" , for helping me select professionally enhancing matting and framing for my artwork . I greatly appreciated his friendliness and encouragement to me as an artist. And his watercolors and architectural sketches were outstanding .
I consider my life blessed to have known him and to have benefitted from his many talents. I celebrate his life and works.
Sincerely, Judith Busse.

Sympathies to the family. I knew Jack from the days when he ran the gallery on 111th. Our home has nary a piece of wall art that he didn't have part in framing or creating. He always was full of stories about the history of not only the neighborhood, but the country. He lit up when he spoke of history and architecture. We shared a love of architecture and design. A wonderful, wonderful man, talented, thoughtful and caring. He will be greatly missed. He brought so much to not only Beverly, but all of Chicago. May he rest in peace.

Dear Marge and Family,
Jack was a mentor to me and a friend who will always hold a special place in my heart. During our first meeting in 1977 we discuseed Prairie Avenue and Glessner House and during our last conversation, we ended talking about the same places 36 years later.I feel blessed to have known him all these years but feel he is catching up on old times with the Glessners,Pullmans,Fields, And Palmers at this very moment. May his rich Chicago legacy be remembered and cherished by all who loved him
Sincerely,
Bill and Kathy Krueger and Family

Robert and I were deeply saddened to hear. Our memories, of course, stretch back many many years--decades, really--to my childhood in Beverly when he taught our family art from his studio on 111th street. We regret not being able to attend today and our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
Beverly and Chicago have lost a treasure. God be with you all.

Joy and I were both deeply saddened when we received word that Jack had passed away. He was without a doubt one of the most accomplished, well respected and kindest men we have ever known--- a man of impeccable character and virtue, but it was his goodness of heart and his zest for life that really set him apart from others. Our home is adorned with the beautiful artwork he created, and you can't look at any of it and not recall the truly interesting and enjoyble story that came with it....whether it was an Amish sunset, a pumpkin patch, or one of his trademark Chicago landmarks. When you took home a Simmerling picture, you were not just getting the artwork, you were taking home a part of Jack that he was sharing with you.
While his voiced is silenced until we see him again, his wonderful influence on us will be part of us forever, especially his love of family, his appreciation for the arts and his genuine fascination with local history. We will miss you, Jack. Thank you for the gift of your special and most sincere friendship. God bless you always.
Our hearts go out to MargIe and all of the Simmerlings on your loss. Our thoughts prayers are with you all.

You were all a huge part of my growing up. You were my family too. Jack was such a wonderful role model, taught me how to be a good parent and citizen. New he couldn't teach me to be an artist! His art on my walls and the walls of my family members and friends means more to me everyday. I love you all and will always have you in my heart.

Jack Simmerling was a wonderful friend to this community for so many years. His gallery always contained beautiful works of art painted by him as well as other artists. He could accommodate just about every request- how to restore a damaged painting, make copies of an old photograph. He was always so welcoming when you stopped in to browse, shop, or just to say "hello." Christmas at the gallery was always so special. Thank you, Jack.

Very sorry to hear about a wonderful member of our community. We have so many paintings, etc. that have frozen places in time. I took art lessons from him as a young girl when his studio was on Monterrey. He had A LOT of patience with this very untalented soul! God bless him.

Jack helped me find photography as a young kid. I owe some of my 30 year photography career to him as he inspired me to shoot and framed my images in his gallery after returning from a family vacation to Ireland in 1978. He will long be remembered for his love of Sacred Heart Catholic Shrine and saving that structure and it's community from destruction. RIP Jack, and thanks for everything.
