96, died Nov. 14. She was a music scholar-librarian who documented the history of black American music, including the banjo's African origin; published Sinful Tunes and Spirituals: Black Folk Music to the Civil War, and is subject of The Librarian and the Banjo documentary by Jim Carrier. She edited her mother's memoir, I Came a Stranger: The Story of a Hull-House Girl. Her husband of 57 years, Morton B. Epstein, died in 2000. She is survived by son William Epstein and wife Sheila Epstein, daughter Suzanne Epstein and husband Paul Segel, grandsons Joel and Aaron Segel, great-grandson Samuel Segel, caregiver Shelia Smith, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Contributions in her memory can be sent to the Music Library Association or Southern Poverty Law Center.

I just learned of Dena's passing. She was my mentor and the person I looked to as a model of librarianship. May her legacy last and may she rest in peace.
