I've been out of town for some time and just read of the passing of Lupe in the FOP news letter. I'm shocked and saddened of his loss. I had the pleasure of knowing Lupe and although we had lost touch I will always have fond memories of him. My heart, condolences and my prayers to the Pena Family.

Please accept my condolences on your loss of Lupe. I remember Lupe as a brand new Sergeant in 014; bright, earnest and a great family man. I recall his pride in his family and his happiness as it grew. To hear that he had advanced to the rank of District Commander gave me great pleasure - he was one of the good guys. I know you all will miss him in your daily lives. But know that he will always be with you, as long as you hold him in your hearts.

Not only an Officer, Son, Brother, Husband, Father, but a friend and brother, and someone I shared childhood with. Fine son of a very Magnificant and loving Father and a Beautiful and hard working Mother. Dona Lupe and Don Jose. My heart aches for them at the moment. But I also find comfort that "this too shall pass", meaning the bad circumstances. And to his wife and children keep the Faith and all those wonderful memories I'm sure you all had. Rest assured that Husband and Daddy has been promoted to Heaven. Towards where we will all gather one day.

Us Cunningham's and the Pena's were neighbors for many years. We remember them fondly and with great respect.

To Sherry, Mathew and Nicole. On behalf of Mom, Tom and Me, we would like to express our deepest sympathy for your loss. I know words can hardly express the sorrow and hurt you are feeling at this point in time. We will NEVER forget Lupe for he was very special to us also. As a son, brother-in-law and brother he was second to none. As you know I have two other brothers, but they are older then me by several years. Lupe and I were very close in our teens and we kept that bond through the years and it never diminished. Our Lord will help us all get through this difficult time, for Lupe is with our Lord and resting now, but he will always be a part of us. I had the pleasure of meeting Lupe and his two brothers Joe and Pete over thirty years ago, way before we both joined the force when we were all in our early twenties. We were a combination of south side men and north side men competing on the same baseball team which was coached by his Dad.The way Lupe excelled on the baseball diamond as our shortstop and our best pitcher, once he joined the force I always new he would have an outstanding career. Lupe was a great person and friend to all who knew him and I know that his passing is extremely difficult for all who loved him dearly, especially his family. Lupe's son Matt and my sons Joe & Jimmy played baseball together since little league. I talked to him almost everyday from spring to late fall. He was one of the funniest guys I knew.
