Elaine Wong Obituary

Elaine Wong, M.D., nee Chong, age 91, of Chicago, passed away on September 2, 2016 of natural causes. Elaine, or "Popo" to her three beloved grandchildren, was a loving grandmother, mother of two children, and wife to Arthur Wong for 51 years. Elaine was in private practice in child psychiatry for more than 60 years and maintained a limited practice until she was 90. She was born in Honolulu, Hawaii as the middle of seven children. She graduated from Indiana University with majors in Chemistry and English, and the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania (now part of Drexel University College of Medicine); she completed residencies in Pediatrics and Psychiatry. For more than two decades, as a committed volunteer at the Chinese American Service League (CASL), she consulted on teacher training and childhood development issues for preschoolers. She was recognized for her contributions with a State of Illinois Women to Women: Making a Difference Award and the CASL Golden Lion award (jointly with her husband). In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, David Wong and daughter-in-law Wai-Sinn Chan of Chicago, and Melissa Wong Aagesen and son-in-law Larry Aagesen, Jr. of Idaho Falls, Idaho, brothers Robert Chong and Lemuel Chong, both of Hawaii, and three grandchildren. Memorials in her honor to the Chinese American Service League (2141 S Tan Ct, Chicago, IL 60616, (312) 791-0418, https://www.caslservice.org/memorial/) or The Salvation Army Metropolitan Division (5040 N. I am honored to share with her wonderful family that Elaine Wong was the wisest, most caring, most dependable, and most positively influential person in my life. There are no words for the gratitude I feel for her, and I will carry her with me for the rest of my life.

Elaine was a very warm, loving woman. We shared good times and many laughs together. It was great that she saw her children marry, have children and be a grandmother. She lived a full life.

Though I only saw her for a few moments each year, I felt right at home with her and enjoyed her friendship. We both grew up in Hawaii and had been to Hong Kong - so there was always plenty to talk about. I will miss her gracious presence. Aloha Nui Loa me Pomaikai! Phil Curtis
