Jim Edwards Obituary

DR JIM EDWARDS James Earl Edwards died peacefully on January 21, 2016, in Chico California at the age of 77. Jim is survived by his wife Carolyn Edwards and his daughters Kimberly Bridges and Kelly Nokleby, son-in-law Brian Nokleby and grandchildren Holly and Ben Nokleby. He is preceded in death by his parents; Louis and Imogene Edwards and brother George Edwards. Jim was born on May 13th 1938 in Chico, California to Louis and Imogene Edwards. He graduated from Durham High School in 1956 and then went onto UC Davis where he received a degree in Veterinary medicine. He married Carolyn Brandt, his high school sweetheart in 1960. After finishing vet school, Jim and Carolyn moved back to the Chico/Durham area and he began working for Evers Animal Hospital. After 4 years Jim and Carolyn started their own veterinary practice and he quickly became the premiere large animal vet in the area where he practiced for 40 years. In addition to his large animal practice Jim taught at Chico State and then at Butte College offering a course on Horse Health and Disease which he taught for 29 years. His classes were always full and fun and he was known as the horse expert. His children and grand-children remember him as a hard working vet who cared about animals and going to work with him was always an adventure! Jim was a dedicated individual who loved the horse industry and was passionate about his community, his family and building his family practice. He was an active and dedicated member of the Free Masons, in which he was a Master Mason. He was also a part of the Comanche Riders Association and was Black Kettle to all his fellow Comanche's. He had been President and board member of Durham Rotary, board member at Chico YMCA, life member of American Veterinary Medical Association, and a life member of American Association of Equine Practioners and the American Endurance Ride Conference. Jim was also founding Charter member of the American Equine Sports Medicine Association and served on the board as well. Along with his career accomplishments he was also a Sigma Nu member from his college days at UC Davis. Jim enjoyed his weekly Breakfast Club Group. Jim was an avid fisherman and enjoyed taking his friends and family on fishing trips to his Deer Creek cabin as well as spending time in Jonesville where Jim and Carolyn own a peaceful mountain cabin. A memorial service is scheduled for Tuesday, February 2, 2016 at 1 p.m. at the Masonic Family Center. A memorial barbeque will be held at his Jonesville cabin this summer. The family would like to thank everyone at RAI dialysis, Dr Sarbu/Dr. Ferguson, and the Twin Oaks staff for their care and dedication to ensuring the comfort and care of Jim and the family. Arrangements are under the direction of Brusie Funeral Home.

I met Dr. Edwards when I was twelve years old in 1972, as he tended to my first horse. Later he was the only Vet I would have chosen for Ferada, my endurance horse and best friend. He also tended to the horses at Meadow Brook Ranch. No one ever wants a sick animal but when Dr. Edwards showed up it was always a joy. He had the best personality. He was an expert at keeping the owners calm under any circumstance. Truly and outstanding being and Vet. Warm wishes to his loved ones.

I just found out about Dr. Edwards passing...he was a great vet and a wonderful human being! He helped saved one of my foals while he was being born...I will never forget how calm but quick he was in getting there to help. You will be missed!

I was ready to drive from Reno to Chico to attend Jim's service. However, the weather forecast say there will be a problem with snow in the mountains. I did drive down for Don Murphy's service in November and just made it home on Hwy. 70, leaving directly after the service and skipping the after service reception. Don't want to do that one again.

I went to both of Jims parents services, missed brother George's and now must miss that fine young fellow's, Jim Edwards, service. I always had great admiration for Jim for both his success in raising a family and his being top of the line in his vet work. So long Jim and a tail wind for your final flight west.

I remember Jim coming to help patch up my horses a few times back in the 1980s when I lived in Chico. Really appreciated his great work. The community will miss him.

I will never forget Jim came to our home at three in the morning. Our horse had both legs caught in a gate. Two hours later with the help of Jim and neighbors our horse was up and standing. We were so relieved. Jim said you need a swig on of whiskey for your nerves! I took a gulp and laughed. What a wonderful person and veterinary. You will be missed with many stories people can share.

I last saw Jim about 3 years ago at a Comanche BBQ. He was the same Jim Edwards I knew when we were in Durham High together. Actually I was in his brother George's class but Jim was always participating in the activities of the school with us. I had a great deal of admiration for Jim with his accomplishments in raising a fine family and being at the top of his work as a veterinarian. My prayers go out to Carolyn and his family for a peaceful transition of being without Jim.

Best regards, Lewis Gage

Jim lived only a mile from where I grew up and was a part of DHS 1963. His Dad was the principal of DHS when I went there and was a wonderful man. He and Imogene were close friends with my parents, Harvey and Madeline Wilson. Jim's reputation as a fine vet preceeded him. He tended to some of our animals over the years at Ever's. My condolences to his entire family.
