Eileen DEVANNEY Obituary

DEVANNEY

Eileen Devanney passed away in Huntsville, Alabama, on January 5, 2013, at the age of 94. She was born Eileen Dean in Hamersville, Ohio, where in the early 1800s, her family was among the earliest settlers of the new state. She grew up in Norwood, Ohio, and attended Norwood High School. She and her husband had a small farm for about 12 years in Colerain Township, but for almost 60 years she lived in her beloved house near Groesbeck, Ohio, the last 24 by herself. She is preceded in death by her husband John Joseph Devanney; sisters Jimmy Schnicke and Everta Speyerer; brother Kenneth Dean; and daughter Rebecca Ann Devanney. She is survived by her son Colonel Thomas Devanney, Sr. and daughter-in-law Christa of Huntsville; daughter Kathleen Sue Maxwell and son-in-law Clarence of Winston, Oregon; granddaughter Katharina Eileen Devanney, Esq., of Akron, Ohio; grandson Thomas Devanney, Jr., of Huntsville; great granddaughter Brigid Maria of Akron; and a number of nieces and nephews and their families.

After her children were grown, she worked as a secretary until retirement from Quantum Chemical Corporation, National Distillers in 1983. An avid gardener all her life, she developed an especially beautiful and wide ranging collection of day lilies. She belonged to the Cincinnati Garden Club and volunteered at the Civic Garden Center. She was a long time supporting member of the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens. She enjoyed being with friends attending performances, playing cards, and trying new restaurants. She spent a number of winters with her daughter and son-in-law in Oregon and loved the rugged southern Oregon coast. When her health began to fail, she moved to Huntsville in late 2011 to be near her son and daughter-in law. Thank you to the Southwest Ohio Council on Aging for their support enabling her to stay in her house. And thank you to all the staff at Regency Retirement Village for their thoroughly professional care in Huntsville. Paul R. Young Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:30 am on Saturday, January 12, at St. Ann Catholic Church, Groesbeck, with Rosary and visitation at 10:30 am. Interment will follow at Arlington Memorial Gardens, Mt. Healthy, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation or your favorite charity.
