LOGAN

Ted J., loving husband of the late Ruthanne Pattison; beloved father of Thomas and Patricia Logan; brother of Richard Logan and the late Carolyn Axe; died on April 9, 2016 at the age of 84. Ted enjoyed a full and productive life. Born and raised in Fort Wayne, Indiana, he obtained a BA in Chemistry from Indiana University and then completed MS and PhD degrees at Purdue University, both in synthetic organic chemistry. He joined Procter and Gamble in 1958 as a research scientist at Miami Valley Laboratories, working primarily in the detergents and fats and oils areas. He authored over 30 U.S. and foreign patents and published an equal number of technical papers. In 1978 Ted became Manager of Doctoral Recruiting for P&G's technical centers in Cincinnati. He visited chemical departments in graduate schools across the U.S., recruiting and giving lectures. European recruiting was eventually merged with U.S. recruiting, providing an opportunity for Ted to travel to most of P&G's overseas operations. Overall, Ted managed the hiring of over 1000 PhD's and MD's during his tenure. He retired from P&G in 1996 as Associate Director, with over 38 years of service. Ted lectured widely on supply/demand of doctorates, how to have a successful interview with potential employers, and the characteristics needed to get an industrial position. He published papers on these subjects in a variety of journals. He was very active in both local and national activities of the American Chemical Society, headed several committees at the national level and held every elected position at the local level, including 30 years as a Councilor. At one point, he attended 50 straight National meetings, held twice per year in different cities. Ted loved international travel, nature, and reading. He was an expert on identification of birds, trees, and wildflowers. With much patience, he succeeded many times in training wild birds to eat from his hand. He will be greatly missed for his intelligence, sense of humor, and thoughtfulness. A gathering of friends to celebrate Ted's life will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2016 at the Ogle & Paul R. Young Funeral Home, 7345 Hamilton Ave. (45231) from 11am to 1pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Cincinnati section of the American Chemical Society, The Michael J. Waaaay back in the day, in the 30s and 40s, Ted, brother Richard, and my dad (Jim Henning) grew up together. He had so many stories of the fun times, even when they scavenged for old potatoes by digging in gardens. Daddy went to Firestone and Ted to P&G, but Ted was always in my dad's heart. I remember our families meeting-up a few times. The last time I talked to Ted was at my dad's funeral in 2003. Ted had just been diagnosed with his Parkinson's and that is how my dad went. I'm glad Ted had this long. He's free of that suffering and I know it's a relief. Je suis desole', Tom and Patty.

Dear Tom and Patty,
I am so sorry to hear of your father's passing, I just learned today. I have many fond memories of both Ted and Ruth growing up. I remember well their love of nature and how they enjoyed the outdoors. I also remember your father's pride in his new home, the grandfather clock and solid Cherry mantle he made himself.
I started at P&G about the same time as your dad retired and I was able to go and visit him a few times a Miami Valley Labs. I was glad to see how liked and well respected your father was with his colleagues.
Ted and Ruth were wonderful people, I am so sorry to hear of Ted's passing too late to come to the memorial service.

Dear Patty and Tom,
Your father was a wonderful man and I am so happy to have known him. I worked in Ph.D. Recruiting when he joined our team. He was such a good man. I was sorry to learn (by reading his obituary) that you have also lost your Mother. I have one story to relate about him that I will never forget. One night after work, we went to your parents' home. He was showing us things around the back of your house. He showed us how to see a squirrel's nest up in a tree. I have never forgotten that and every time I see a squirrel's nest, I think of your Father. My prayer is that God be with you at this sad time.

I will not be able to attend but I am certain many other P&Gers will be present. I was a university Ph.D. recruiter for Ted's group for over 10 years and learned a lot from Ted. A fine gentleman and colleague. I am sorry for your loss and it is the loss for the many who knew him.

Dear Family and Loved Ones of Ted,
I was very sad when I learned of Ted's passing. He was one of the first people I met when I interviewed at P&G, and I was immediately struck by his genuine interest, his quick wit, his intelligence and his dedication to his colleagues. After I joined the Company, I always enjoyed opportunities to visit with him at lunch or break. What a great example he was to us all! It was clear to all that he had perhaps the single most important hand in creating the R&D powerhouse that was P&G back in the 80's and 90's. I'll always have fond memories of Ted.

Although I did not know Dr. Logan personally, I followed the link here from the PnGeezers Retiree Network . . . and in having the privilege of learning about him through the descriptions of those who knew him very well . . . I am very sorry I did not have the opportunity. A man who could get wild birds to eat from his hand . . . and also held how many patents? No slouch he! And he looks as though he might have had a droll sense of humor. To Thomas and Patricia, it is very difficult losing your 2nd parent - it means growing up in a difficult way. A prayer for you. Dear Patty and Tom, I was so saddened to read of Ted's passing. I know that he suffered in these last several years with that nasty Parkinson's Disease and now has been released from that awful burden. But he leaves behind countless friends and colleagues who both loved and respected him. I was so fortunate to have him as first a mentor and then a friend through the American Chemical Society. He was so dignified and dedicated to his service in the ACS and its members. I learned so much from him! While he still lived in his beautiful home on Day Road, my husband and I went out with a supper to share. We walked the yard to enjoy all of its beauty and to share in his pleasure in knowing the identities of each species. I even had the chance to introduce him to my own mother who was dealing with her own physical challenges so that they could converse and share stories. I will miss him dearly. I would certainly attend his service on April 16, but my husband and I have a planned weekend in Pennsylvania to watch after our 18-month old grandson. On Saturday, I will lift my heart, mind, and spirit with fond memories of your father. May God bless you in your time of great loss.
