You have my greatest sympathies in the lose of Jim. He was everything I aspire to be as a software developer: wise, humble, and enthusiastic. Though I only met him a few times, he always remembered who I was, making me feel valued and welcomed. I will honor his memory by doing the same for others.

I loved hearing Jim's presentations at many ruby and rails conferences I attended. I think it's fair to say that he was my favorite presenter. I always learned a lot from him. He was a very bright developer, and an even better teacher. I was honored to meet him in person, and very taken by his humility and kindness. He has done SOOO much for the ruby and rails community. I'd like to leave you with one in particular. Last year, I was asked to give a presentation to teenage homeschooled kids which would inspire them to try out programming. I chose to emulate one of Jim's presentations on Youtube. It was the one on code katas, where he showed people how to write and test a Roman Numeral converter. I looked it up, specifically, because it clearly demonstrated the proper way to incrementally develop code. I am certain that Jim will continue to teach and inspire generations to come. Thank you, for sharing this wonderful man with us. He will be greatly missed.

Jim has always been an inspiration and role model for me

I used and still use his work every day. When I started my company, he was one of the few who gave me the motivation that I truly needed to go forward.

Imagining a world without Jim is incredibly hard but I know I will never forget him. My thoughts go to his family.

Jim was Father Christmas incarnate. He inspired me in countless ways. He gave me the gift of juggling and my boys the gift of Zelda. He will be alive in memory for at least another couple generations!

Jim treated all with respect and the highest degree of dignity, never looked down upon any, but lifted up the spirit of anyone who had contact with him. I will miss Jim here on earth until I see him once again in heaven.

My heart goes out to Jim's family. I cannot imagine the grief you are going through at this time.

I knew Jim as a member of the Cincinnati developer community. His passion for life and software was contagious. If I knew he was to present at a user group, I made sure to get there. We are all better off having known and connected with Jim.

I work across the hall from neo, so Jim and I crossed paths when we were on the same bio-break routine and when he was playing with his remote control helicopter (and I just HAD to check it out!). What a wonderful person! I have never met someone who was always so overjoyed to wave (with great excitement) and say hello. I always looked for him because his smile made my day. If only more of us could have that magnetic quality. He was a blessing to me.

Our son Geoff worked at NEO with Jim. We only met him once when we went to see Geoff's new office.

I know Geoff admired Jim and was pleased to have a chance to learn from him. I'm sure everyone at NEO Cincinnati will miss him greatly, as will Ruby-lovers he's met and mentored all over the world.

Our hearts go out to you and your family for the sudden loss of your husband, father and brother.

Jim, you are one of the smartest, most kind, and most humble people I've ever met. You always had the time to teach me new things, and show me the cool stuff you were working on. You were an inspiration to me, and I always looked up to you as a developer, a speaker, and a person. I am glad I knew you and I could call you a friend.

Jim will be greatly missed by me and all Rubyists. He was inspiring both for his technical competence and the warm, welcoming and cheerful way he interacted with everyone. Jim is probably the greatest programmer I will ever know.

February 21, 2014

Jim will be greatly missed. He had such a kind smile, gentle spirit, and big heart. Working with him on church programs was always a pleasure.

Steve Downie

February 21, 2014

I was privileged to share a few drinks, a few meals and dozens of conversations with him over the last 7 years. Subjects like Rake, open source, Ruby, the evolution of software engineering, robotics, scotch, music, and life in general were talked about. His openness, and great sense of humor were always there. He will be remembered as one of the heroes of open source, especially with the Ruby and Rails communities.

Many of you knew him far better than I, and my heart goes out to all of you, as together, we mourn Jim's passing. He was a great human being, a great software engineer and will truly be missed by all who knew him, especially those who knew him well.

Helen you and the kids are in my thoughts and prayers at this time. I am so sorry I will not be able to attend the services for his celebration of life, and the new life he has inherited. As a former teen at New Burlington and a visitor as often as I could in my adult years I always appreciated knowing that New Burlington Church of Christ was in such capable and Godly hands, mind and heart as his as part of the team that has shepherded the church for these last many years.

Jim was the very definition of a beacon within the Ruby community. He led the way to better code for so many of us and also, more importantly, showed us how to be better human beings. His joy, love and infectious enthusiasm pulled you into his orbit and affected the way you thought about things and treated those around you. He was also one of the most genuinely humble men I have ever met.

He was well-loved and will be very much missed.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Although I haven't seen Jim in many years (probably since high schoo)I can still remember him as being one of the friendliest people in our class. I can see in his professional life, he not only achieved much success, but also many true friends.. Prayers go out to his family and loved ones.

February 20, 2014

So sorry to hear about Jim's passing. I knew him from the many conferences he presented at. He was always passionate and engaging - both onstage and off. Many people will miss him.

Dave Thomas

February 20, 2014

Jim and I had a kind of nomadic friendship. We met at conferences, and we ran training sessions together. Each time we met, we picked up where we left off, regardless of whether the gap was a couple of days or a couple of months. And I treasured each of those meetings—the breakfasts before a course, or the tired evening meals after a day of speaking.

Jim was smart, of course, and gentle. But he was also the most enthusiastic person I knew. Ask him a question he didn't know the answer to, and he'd light up with pleasure at the thought of a discovery to be made. And he was most enthusiastic of all when talking about his family—his pride and love radiated from him.

He taught everyone, not just as a teacher but also as a model of how to enjoy life and the people in it.

Thousands of people will honor Jim simply by carrying a little of his teaching around with them. I think that would make him happy.

I never got the chance to spend much time with Jim--we met once, had a great conversation (as he did with everybody, near as I can tell), and then our paths never crossed again. That said, he's touched so many peoples' lives who are all dear to me in turn, that I can't help but mourn the fact that I never got the chance to spend more time with him.

Jim, you were a great man, a light in the darkness and a wonderful example by which the rest of us in this industry should follow. You will be missed.

David Bock

I'm in shock over Jim's passing. I expected to see him at an annual retreat in a few months. Jim was well-respected in our professional/technical community, and in those places, hundreds of people are expressing their condolences. Jim was simultaneously young-at-heart and an old soul, and that combination made a human being you couldn't help but love.
