Walter Del Gaudio Sr.

Dr. Walter Del Gaudio Sr. of Dallas passed away Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013, in Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township, surrounded by his family.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of the late Henry and Helen Matteo Del Gaudio.

He was a graduate of New Utrecht High School, New York City, and Manhattan College, where he received the physics and math awards for academic excellence.

He received his medical degree from State University of New York Downstate Medical School, and completed residencies at King's County Hospital of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Strong Memorial Hospital of Rochester, N.Y. He was board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine and anesthesiology.

He served as a U.S. Air Force captain during the Vietnam War.

For many years while residing in New York City, he was a police surgeon for the New York City Police Department.

He was a skilled and caring physician who practiced pulmonary, critical care medicine, and anesthesiology in the Wyoming Valley for many years, as well as having served as professor of anesthesiology at the University of Rochester after completing his residency there.

Preceding him in death were his brothers, Vincent and Ernest Del Gaudio, and sisters, Anna Cassara and Tootsie Giordano.

Surviving are his wife of 27 years, the former Patricia Parrish; children, Lisa Del Gaudio, Forty Fort; Leslie Del Gaudio, Dallas; Dr. Lori Del Gaudio, Dallas; Dr. Walter Del Gaudio Jr. and his wife, Kavita, Shavertown; and Marisa Del Gaudio, Dallas; grandchildren, Matthew Brunn, Luke, Jake, Alex and Mia Del Gaudio and Audrey Del Gaudio; father-in-law, George Parrish; sisters-in-law, Antoinette Del Gaudio, Edith Del Gaudio and Betty Parrish; nieces and nephews; and many loving friends and neighbors. He is also survived by his beloved dog, Daphne.

The family wishes to thank the Geisinger Wyoming Valley nursing and medical staffs for exceptional care during his illness and special caregivers, Megan and Melissa.

A Blessing service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Metcalfe-Shaver-Kopcza Funeral Home Inc., 504 Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, with the Rev. Joseph Kearney of St. Benedict's Parish, Wilkes-Barre, officiating.

Interment will be at the convenience of the family.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
