I was just thinking of Mr. Barnes the other day, discussing with a friend what made me become a biology major in college...and pursuit of biomedical science as a career. Mr. Barnes' Honors Biology class at OSHS (1985-86) was a big influence. He always demanded excellence, but did it with a wonderful sense of humor (you had to be disciplined taking his exams or you would get so lost in the Far Side cartoons you would forget to take the test). I was sad to learn he had passed. He had such a great influence on so many students...not just as a science teacher, but as a person. He is missed.

What a great man, and brilliant teacher! He challenged us in ways that great teachers do, and held us responsible to ourselves and our classmates. He shaped my future decisions in a way that I wish I would have expressed to him directly. He always comes to mind when I think of how my life's path has unfolded. I'm sure he's tickled to know he inspired so many by his example, his dedication to teaching, and his expectation of excellence over mediocrity. To be missed and remembered...Thank you, Barnes!

I was saddened to hear about Keith passing away. His first year at Olathe High School was my senior year 1969-70. I remember well my first meeting with him in his advance biology class. His style then was to welcome the students on day one with a somewhat hardnosed set of no nonsense demands. Some students wanted to transfer immediately. I don't recall if anyone dropped the class, but I'm certain for those of us who stayed we were glad we didn't.
I was hard on teachers but Keith quickly became my favorite. There were a variety of reasons but perhaps mostly it was his young at heart enthusiasm for his work. From grade school through college, I never had a teacher that was almost as much a friend as a teacher. He challenged me in a way that few teachers did and he did it making me want to do more. His impact on me was at least temporarily strong enough that when I left for college the following year, my intention was to major in biology. Although I majored in something else, I always felt I knew more about science then most people because of his classes.
Keith in many respects was as youthful as his students. I remember a practical joke he did on the front office. After my first semester biology, I signed up for an independent biology research class with Keith as my supervisor. He was required to turn in a mid-term attendance report on all of his students and next to my name he recorded 99 unexcused absent days. Since it was my last semester, the principal's office called me in along with other problem students to lecture us on the impact this would have on graduating. Initially I had no idea why I was there but it was clear to me after the first couple of minutes that this was a mistake. I don’t think the office ever figured it out, but the clues were there. One, the semester didn’t have 99 days, and two this was Keith’s class. Keith thought it was hilarious. I did as well.
Sorry to say I only occasionally saw Keith since my high school years. I last ran into him at the Kansas City Symphony a few years ago. It was always good to see him. He always appeared as youthful in body and spirit every time from my first encounter to last with him.
To Keith's family, my condolences, thoughts and prayers to you. We all share in your loss.

What a great loss to education! Mr. Barnes was my 7th Grade Science teacher his very first year of teaching at Webb City Junior High in 1961-62 (also 8th Grade Science 1962-63). I thought he thought we were in college, due to his drive to push us toward excellence. He was one of the very best teachers I ever had. I learned so much my 7th grade year, and it was my most challenging, including Bachelor's and Master's Degrees. I think because of those two years at Webb City Junior High in Mr. Barnes' class and others, being challenged to learn so much, I chose to teach at this level the last 23 years of my 33 years of teaching. When I moved back to Webb City and taught at Webb City Junior High the last 10 years of my career, it was with great fond memories of Mr. Barnes as I walked into "his" classroom which still echoed with the exciting times spent under his teaching.
I had intended to write him and tell him "Thanks" for being the exemplary teacher he was. I regret not having done so. I saw him at a funeral a few months ago, but did not recognize him at the time, although I felt that I knew him. Somehow he and I both looked different than we did in 1961.
Mr. Barnes raised the bar and dedicated his entire life to his students, of which I am grateful for having the privilege of being in his classroom.
My sympathy is extended to Mr. Barnes' family, friends, and fellow students.

I just found out today that Mr. Barnes had passed away. He was my 7th and 8th grade science and freshman biology teacher in Webb City, MO in 1963 - 1965. He was a wonderful teacher back then even though he was just starting his career. He was well respected. I moved to Olathe over 30 years ago and heard he was teaching here, but I never got to see him. My thoughts are with his family. He was a very special person.

I graduated from OSHS in 1983 and had not seen Mr. Barnes since my senior year. Then one day in 2006 I popped my head up at work one day when I unmistakenly heard his voice. I came out of my office to look around and there was someone I looked up to 23 years previously. I asked him, "Are you Mr. Barnes?" and in characteristic fashion he asked me, "What class are you from?" We chatted for awhile and it brought back great memories. My condolences to his family as he was a special man, and I will always remember him with a smile.

Mr. Barnes, wow, I'm not sure where to start. Mr. Barnes was one of those teachers you will remember for the rest of your life. He really was the best teacher, friend, and mentor. I'll never forget the quote Mr. Barnes had hanging on his wall. "If you had one hour to live, you would want to spend it in this class because this class seems like an eternity". Thank you Mr. Barnes for everything... You will be missed!

I just returned home from the "celebration". It was in true Keith Barnes style and thanks to the family for letting him be his unconventional self. He wanted to pull us together to support each other rather than a quiet and somber gathering. We will mourn the loss of his spirit, but it's a catching spirit that each of us need to embrace! Here's to you Keith!

What a loss! Mr. Barnes was my FAVORITE teacher at OSHS and one I would never forget. I think I may still have that crazy binder he made us keep all year long!
He is solely responsible for making me fall in love with science. He taught me how to keep myself organized and how to study for those difficult exams. He made learning so much fun!
Year after year I went back for the Thanksgiving Alumni dinners….until one day he said – don’t you think you’re getting a little old? I loved seeing him and loved to see the new followers he had mesmerized. You’re never too old to appreciate that!
One fond memory I have is when he turned 50. I was his student that year. For his birthday we decorated the classroom with some – well let’s say – interesting photos. I think he didn’t find all of them for days. I was just glad that we didn’t get in trouble – because we juniors just went along with the shenanigans of the senior class.
Moreover, I adored his ability to change those tough guys from the 12th grade into students that got excited to learn. He was an amazing mentor, scholar and I would like to say friend of each student that had the pleasure to sit in his class.
My condolences to his family and THANK YOU for allowing him to touch so many lives.

To Mr. Barnes' Family,
I'm so sorry to hear of Mr. Barnes passing. He was my sign language teacher at OHS and sparked an interest in me that continues to this day. Mr. Barnes always took time to listen even when the content was nonsense. I count Mr. Barnes as one of my all time favorite teachers. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Mr. Barnes...
What a wonderful, inspirational, and unforgetable teacher. Wether it be in daily classes or a genetics trip to St. Louis he always kept interest levels high and encouraged everyone to succeed. Barnes truly went above and beyond as an educator and with that has left an lasting impression on myself and any of those he taught. He will always be remembered, greatly missed, and will forever be my favorite teacher.
To the family - my thoughts are with you. May all memories be cherished and provide comfort at this time.

Doug Washington’s post was perfect. He always treated us like adults but speaking for me, I was nowhere near being a grown up.
After I graduated we always kept in touch. In fact, his phone number is a phone number that I will never forget. I went into the Navy & when I was in a foreign country, I would call him collect just to mess with him. Every single time he accepted the charges! I called him from almost every country in the Far East. When I was in the Gulf War back in 1991, I called from Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and United Arab Emirates. Each time, we would talk for only a few minutes but just hearing his voice made me feel so close to home. When we would close the phone conversation, he would always say “10-4”.
He had an immeasurable positive impact on THOUSANDS of people (And ladies). Our teacher & friend Corky will truly be missed.
10-4 Corky!

I am saddened to hear about the passing of a true friend. I had the privilege of being in Mr. Barnes' Biology class at Olathe South back in the early 90's. I had stayed in touch with Keith up until a year ago, and consider him a very close friend. Countless hours were spent on his deck discussing the ways of the world over a cold home brewed beverage.
Keith should look back on his life with good thoughts knowing all the lives he touched and inspired. The world is a better place because of the impressions he left on it, and we will all miss him dearly.

Always "Mr. Barnes," Keith was among the finest individuals and teachers I knew during my time at OHS ('68-'71). I will never forget his reaction when, sent out to collect leaves, a fellow student returned with a small tree he had pulled out of the ground. "We just want a few leaves; you didn't have to kill it!" Fond memories are a tribute to this unusually considerate educator.

Corky's family
It has been years since I have seen Keith (always Corky to me) and didn't realize that he taught biology and chemistry as I did. My memories are from the high school days and I will always cherish them. He was a friend to all and since I was a kid from the country, it meant a lot to me to be friends with him. We participated in music, drama, sports and swimming in the Barnes pond. He always had a smile and it was infectious. I am sure he will be missed by all and I am glad for experiences in high school. My sympathy goes out to all.

Keith was an excellent teacher and mentor as well as a friend for life. Many of us from the Olathe High School Class of 1972 were fortunate enough to visit with him last September during our 35 year reunion. I don't believe he missed one of our reunions. We will miss Keith. May God comfort his family during this time.

Mr. Barnes was the best teacher that I ever had. I'm sure that I am one of thousands who can say this.
I graduated from Olathe South in 1986 and was in 2 classes that Mr. Barnes taught.
Of all that I learned from him, what has served me most in the 20+ years since I was in his classroom was this: I had everything I needed to succeed in life, but it was up to me to be a success.
Mr. Barnes treated his students like adults and taught us that we had to take responsibility for our own education, grades and ultimately, our lives. The subjects he taught us were Chemistry or Biology, but the way he taught and treated us contained an even more valuable lesson. He taught that excuses, blaming others, complaining about things being unfair...none of that could make us successful. Only our decision to succeed, followed by hard work, persistence and perseverance would do it.
Because I've got a hard head and I thought I could find an easier way, it took a while for me to see that Mr. Barnes was right. Now, I have a staff that I train and I am teaching them the way that Mr. Barnes taught me. Again, I am sure that there are many, many others who are doing the same.
Mr. Barnes will be missed, but his legacy lives on in every student he taught and every life he touched.

I took Mr. Barnes' biology class in 1989 and it was a rather life changing experience for me. He totally captivated my interest (Ok, I had a bit of a crush on him) and inspired me to get a Ph.D. in genetics. I know there are many others with similar stories. I hadn't seen him in years but still think about him often and am so sad to hear about his death.

Mr. Barnes was a great teacher and a better person. He had a great sense of humor and even managed to make biology interesting. Plus, he could throw an eraser at a sleeping student like nobody's business. I know, having been hit at least once. He will certainly be missed.

I was a student of Mr. Barnes, graduating from Olathe High School in 1978. He had such a positive impact on the lives of so many young people and followed our progress throughout our lives. I had the opportunity to visit with Keith at a recent Missouri Repetory Theatre event where he was a docent and I was a guest. As many students as he taught over the years, Keith always made me feel special and took great interest in my life and me as an individual. From our common heritage from the farm through our current roles in suburbia, Keith was always a good friend, a mentor, and was always there when I needed a confidential sounding board. His gift for listening and coaching will long be remembered and greatly missed.

Dear Roger and Janet,
I was just stunned this morning to read about Corky's death. He was always so popular here with all of us and I know I have run into some of his students over the years and know how well liked he was with them. They just thought he was wonderful. We were in the Madrigal group that Mr. Weldon put together Corky's senior year. I know that he remained a good friend to Mr. Weldon. Corky was a blessing to all who were lucky enough to know him. Sincerely, Kay Lassiter
