Just a note to Jocille and Bryan to let you know I think of you two and Jerry often. His picture on my office bookshelf is a reminder of my humble beginnings here at the MS Board of Bar Admissions almost 38 years ago. He served so many years as Board Chair and was a mentor/teacher to me and so many others. He had a wealth of knowledge and patience to go along with that because he was willing to explain something more than once if you did not understand it. Miss seeing you and Bryan when you would travel down with Jerry for Board meetings. Praying that you two are doing well and God's blessings on you. Best, Linda Knight

Jerry grew up in Wilzin Park and lived four houses from me. He was a close friend of my brother, Barry, who died in Viet Nam. Barry was an A- student while Jerry was straight A's all the way. I remember the day he was at our home with Barry who asked him to recite a few famous speeches so Jerry recited "Friends, Romans and Country men, lend me your ears..." and two other speeches. I was blown away by this eight year old boy since I was about twelve and couldn't recite any of them! In addition to being a scholar he was a great golfer who competed with the adults at our country club and was also a first string baseball player. I was in Houston once playing tennis , Vanderbilt for me, Rice for Jerry, and he asked me to stay with him in his dorm room. A great young boy & man.

Dear Jocille,
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I was a classmate at Yale. Years ago I had a federal case up your way and you and Jerry had me to your house for dinner and showed me every kindness. He will be missed.

Dear Jocille and Bryan, Irene and I want to express our deepest sympathy to you both upon the passing of our dear friend Jerry. For many years he and I worked together in the National Conference of Bar Examiners and with the ABA Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar. I remember fondly when both of you and Jerry hosted our NCEB Board members in your home in Greenville and at Doe's several years ago. When I first met him at an ABA meeting somewhere in the early 1980's, and listened to his brilliant observations in a deep South drawl on the topic at hand, and later learned of his Ivy League legal education, I knew I had found a kindred spirit from Mississippi near my Alabama home. Over the years we shared many good times together, and enjoyed talking not only about legal and education topics, and the state of agriculture in the Delta and elsewhere, but also about some famous folks we both knew from his Yale Law School class. Our last visit was at a recent NCBE Board meeting in South Florida to which past Chairs of the organization were invited. The affection of all for Jerry was palpable. His death came so quickly and was shocking to all of us who knew him so well through the NCBE and the Section. Thanks so much to both of you for sharing him so freely with us in these important volunteer activities over the years. We grieve with you and for you for your great loss. May he rest in peace. I worked with Jerry when he was the commander of D Company, 467th Engineer Battalion in Greenville and I was the commander of his sister active duty unit, D Company, 20th Engineer Battalion at Fort Campbell, KY. Jerry was a wonderful guy to work with and a very professional Army officer. I was very sorry to hear of his passing. I will be praying for his family. Major Kelly M. Jerry was the Dean of Bar Admissions in Mississippi, and a former Chair of the National Conference of Bar Examiners. Having enjoyed Jerry's stories, leadership in bar admissions, and sense of history, his passing is a loss to many of us. He was never too busy to offer guidance, always affable, and an example of what's best about our profession. To his family, may grace and peace find you during the days ahead.

Jo Cille and Bryan, I am deeply saddened to learn of Jerry's passing. I knew Jerry for 25 years as one of his financial advisors (from Boston). I always enjoyed speaking to such a kind and brilliant man. We have had such a long history and have spoken hundreds of times. I will miss this wonderful man. His pecans arrived every Christmas and always gave me and my family a special treat. It won't be the same now. I am so sorry for your great loss.

I was saddened to hear of Jerry's passing. It was an honor and privilege to be working for the Mississippi Board of Bar Admissions during Jerry's tenure as Chairman of the Board. I served under his faithful leadership for the first 19 years I worked at this office. He was a brilliant man who willingly shared his wealth of knowledge in the bar admissions field and helped pioneer the Mississippi Board of Bar Admissions agency as we know it now. Jerry also worked tirelessly on the national bar admissions scene with the National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE), having served in many positions over the years, including Chair of the NCBE, member of its Board of Trustees, and in most recent years as the Chair of the Technology Committee. Words cannot begin to express the deep gratitude we have for Jerry's service to the bar admissions community and for our deepest sympathies to Jo and Bryan. My heartfelt prayers are with you. May you feel the prayers of the many friends and loved ones who are lifting you up and a peace that only God can bring during this difficult time. I was shocked and heartbroken this afternoon when I finally read my daily email from Rice University and learned of Jerry's death. My condolences go out to Jerry's family for your loss. As political science majors and Southerners who saw the necessity for change, Jerry and I quickly developed an everlasting bond that began the first day of Freshman Orientation. I read his copies of the Delta Democrat: he told me stories of growing up in the Mississippi Delta. When I visited him in Greenville, he took me to Doe's. He had a brilliant grasp of the law and politics and a genuine love of all people. He will be sorely missed.

Jocille, I am so sorry for your loss. I have such fond memories of Jerry from High School. He was one of a very few boys who asked me out for a date. My brothers and I also took Jerry out on the lake to teach him to water ski, but I think we came closer to drowning him. Even so, he was a great sport. I had so hoped to meet you and reconnect with Jerry at the 20 year reunion, but alas, you and Jerry were off to Europe. I am sure you have a huge number of close friends and family that will help you through this sad time, but still, it will take time. I'll be keeping you and your son in my heart. Jerry's loss will be felt by so many.

Dear Mrs. Hafter and Bryan,
I have just learned of Mr. Hafter's passing. I am devastated and heartbroken. Our prayers are with you. Sincerely, Victoria York and Bennett York III

Jocille,
I am so sorry to read in today's DDT that Jerry has passed on. I grew up a block from the Hafters and Jerry was a good friend of my brother, Barry. I believe Barry was a slightly better tennis player but Jerry easily beat him on the golf course where he also beat most of the adults, too. I hope to see you tomorrow. Thorne

It was my pleasure to be around Jerry Hafter from 1993 through 2006. Many things impressed me. His total commitment to making the public schools better and more responsive to the student needs. He and Jocille were very accepting of June and I when we moved to Greenville. He was very helpful and I hold him in very high regard. He did an incredible amount of good for the people of Mississippi and beyond. He will be missed and remembered. Rest in peace Jerry,

Jocille,
So terribly sorry to hear about Jerry. I have fond memories of when we played a lot of golf back in Jr. High and High School as well as in the 70's and 80's. He was one of the best around Greenville and the Delta. Mississippi has just lost one of its leading legal minds. You and your family will be in Donna's and my thoughts and prayers. May GOD bless you and your family at this time.
