VIRGINIA MAYER Obituary

Virginia Cunningham Mayer, 96, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2015 with family by her side. Known affectionately as "Nonnie" by her family and friends, she spent the majority of her life in Memphis, but was born in Booneville, MS on October 30, 1918. She worked at Madison Cadillac for 26 years prior to her retirement. Nonnie was the widow of Howard J. Mayer, and was preceded in death by her daughter Barbara Mayer Davis. She is survived by her daughter, Beverly Mayer Mankey, seven grandchildren, Deborah Flettrich (Erik), Wils Davis IV, Ginger Kirkpatrick (Shane), Elizabeth Woodmansee (Woody), Elaine Stroud (Otis), Ellen Flynn (Lance), Elise Woodmansee (Mark), and 12 great-grandchildren. Nonnie was full of life. She was loving, generous, strong-willed, and loved spending time with her family. She enjoyed traveling, shopping, and entertaining. She was especially known for her homemade ravioli and Christmas eggnog. Her company was truly enjoyed by friends of all ages. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, February 6 at The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception with visitation one hour prior. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials in her honor be sent to the charity of the donor's choice.

Beverly and family, I am so sorry to hear of your Mom's passing. I was out of town when it happened and could not be there. Beverly, you were so sweet to come to my Mother's (also Virginia) Wake in December. I am sorry I was unable to be there for your Mother's service. A beautiful lady, who raised a wonderful family. What a legacy she has! I know how you are missing her right now. My thoughts, prayers and love go out to you all.

Sweet Nonnie! Always such a delight to be around. I have such fond memories of being with her in Memphis and Destin. I loved hearing her sweet southern accent, along with that little giggle of hers as we would talk when I spent time with her. One of the things I will remember her for is the way she loved her family and how they loved her. She was a special woman who will be missed by all that knew her. I am sending my prayers for Deborah and the rest of the family.
