Memories from the old St. Louis-St. Dominic day camp in the middle 60's. All good. Clearpool, cooling by the huge fans in the gym, the rattling "Superior Coach" school bus and those camp outs in the wild complete with fires! At the center of all the fun was Coach Mathis with his calm demeanor.
He taught me the true meaning of character and sportsmanship. Lessons that have lasted a lifetime. Learn from mistakes-try again, only harder and smarter. He was the first person I ever heard the words "There is no "I" in team effort!"
Coaches Carie and Brignole were great men in their own right, but Coach Mathis knew and embodied what a "coach" meant.

To the best coach I ever had, I say thank you from the bottom of my heart. Coach left a lasting and caring impression on so many of us who played for him at St. Dominic. I might not have been the best athlete on the court, but even as I went on to play college basketball, I gave it my all everyday because in the back of mind, I knew if I did I would somehow be making Jim Mathis proud.

That's the kind of teacher he was and the kind of impact he had on me.

Coach will be sorely missed.

Jaybird and I were team mates on Memphis State cross-country and track teams. We were close friends. He was a year ahead of me at MSU and more than that on the track. He always fondly greeted my parents at Memphis U ball games. He was a great competitor and team mate. My thoughts and prayers are with his sons and their families.

Thanks, Coach, for the life lessons you taught on and off the track/court.
Prayers for the Mathis family.

To the best Coach I ever had the privilege of playing for. So many fond memories at St Dominic because of Coach Mathis. The baseball trips in the old VW bus, him giving us a 1/2 track headstart and still beating us behind the gym. All the nicknames he had for us. What a GREAT man, he will be sorely missed. Prayers out to Jay and Jon and the family. "Coach", thanks for showing each of us how to be winners and more importantly, how to work toward perfection through practice!

I played for and learned so much from Coach Mathis during my time at St Dominic. I remember fondly the times when we were employing our full court St Dominic Warrior press. There are so many fun memories and lessons that i learned with Coach Mathis that I didn't fully appreciate then but understand now and use with my own children. Thank you Coach. You are a treasure that I will not forget.

I was pleased and proud to have my sons Justin and Whit Miller coached by Jim Mathis between 1984 and 1993. He was a wonderful coach and a fine individual. The world is a little less bright with his death. It is so wonderful that his legacy at St. Dominic is continuing in the capable hands of his son Jay.

God bless your journey.

I ran track with "Jaybird," at MEM ST. He ran 440, me 880. Remember his 3 buddies but only one name, nickname of "liBo.' Easy going, laid back and fast. RIP

Jim was always competitive but always fair! He loved coaching and he loved providing encouragement to players and officials alike in his own unique way(s). I will forever and always remember this man who simply put was a man of character, charisma, colorful quotes and yes a competitor! May he always bring smiles to those whose fortunes were great enough to have met Coach Jim Mathis!
