My fondest memories of "Mr. Garrett" are his quirky jokes and fun rides to YMCA Day Camp. He provided rides to my siblings and me one fantastic summer, to make sure we enjoyed day camp. When I think of my school years in Concord, Mr. Garrett is right up there on the list of "who I want to be like when I grow up." We need more like him! Chris, Pat, Cam, Merrill, Carter - you might not remember the Jones kids from Farnum Ave., but we sure remember your wonderful dad! Our thoughts are with you.

Soon after coming to Concord in 1990, I found that Michael Garrett and I were the only local residents who had graduated from Cleveland Heights High School. Arranging to meet him, I found him to be the respected and admired educator, known to all as "the man" at Concord High School. Michael Garrett was truly a wonderful educator who cared deeply for his students and his school. I intend to nominate him for the Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame at Cleveland Heights High School, a much deserved recognition.

Indeed I remember attending Modern European History classes in1962 and what a refreshing spin on history that was by an exceptional teacher and role model! I will always remember "Mr Garrett" fondly as the most real and personable teacher I ever had and now reading his obituary I am thoroughly impressed with the rest of his charitable citizenship and full life! His spirit will live on in all of us! Lois (Farrell) Steiner

I remember my mother getting a certified letter from CHS, notifying her that my brother was suspended for doing wheelies on his motorcycle on the track. The letter was in poem form and very funny. It also came after he was already back in school......my mother saved that letter for years. It was Mr Garrett letting her know, as he had to that he was suspended but with the humor, also letting her know it was not a "bad" act and that he was still a really good kid. He had such a way of finding that balance. Wouldn't his parents have been proud if they could have seen his success and now all the things we are writing in about him, and not because he has passed, because he was a CHS legend and touched so many of our lives. To his family, thank you for sharing him with us, he made CHS a great experience for many. Talking of him often will keep him alive in our hearts and memories, which you have so many of. I wish you peace and comfort at this time. Maureen (Parker) Herrick class of 1980

As the retired Chief Probation Oficer for Concord District Court, I had many ocassions to deal with Mike Garrett--he was amazing, witty and exceedlingly tuned into the kids on every level. Although in theory he should have run the entire school department in Concord, he was so marvelous in his position and able to do many things that a more prestigious position would have prevented, that being the "bad man" was a great role. Everytime one of my probationers received a "poem" from Mike, it required some intervention on the part of probation and the Judge but we always knew where Mike was coming from:::: Kids First. A wonderful man and a marvelous educator

Dear Bette and Family,
It was with sadness that I read the message that you have lost Mike. It was my pleasure to have had him in just his second year of teaching at CHS (1961-'62), and whenever old classmates get together, Mike Garrett always comes up as our best/favorite teacher. He did a wonderful job in preparing us for college--actually taught us to take notes--and always with dignity and good humor. He succeeded in making Modern European History interesting!
I know this is a very difficult time for you. Please know that others are thinking of you.

I had the distinct privilege to have worked with Mike at Concord HS. I started back in 1984. He taught me how to do my job with dignity and care. He cared greatly about his colleagues and of course the students. Mike was always a man of his word and you could always sit and chat, while looking for advice. He will always be in my heart. May he rest in peace and God give his family strength. He lived a long and fruitful life. I will pray for him and his family. LiveStrong !!

There are people who truly make a difference in your life. Mr. Garrett made a difference in mine. My teen years were filled with uncertainty at home. Mr. Garrett was always there for me at CHS. Sometimes it was just a smile and a whatcha doin' Phil as we passed in the hallway. Other times If I needed to talk things through with someone we would meet in his office. He would listen with respect, caring, and understanding. When I remember him now, it's always with a smile.

I had the pleasure to work with Mike during my 30 year tenure at CHS. They don't make administrators like that anymore! He was always upbeat and made coming to "work" not work but a fun and personal place to be. His humor was infectous even when he was dealing with the "misguided youts" at CHS. One story I can share is after I had a slight stroke I was at Concord Hospital during recovery and saw a couple of students walking across hospital grounds, I knew they were supposed to be in class, so I called Mike at CHS (he was in charge of discipline) and told him about the kids. With a big belly laugh he thanked me for the report and promised me a new "outside rover duty" when I got back to CHS. They don't make 'em like that anymore but it was pleasure to experience the "Mike Garrett" times at CHS, my heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. It is truly a thing to behold the outpouring of love for this man who left quite awhile ago but left his mark on sooooooo many.

To the Garrett Family~
I was so sad when I went on Facebook tonight and saw a post from a friend that Mr. Garrett had passed away.
Like so many others have said, Mr. Garrett was a wonderful, warm, friendly and very funny guy. I can still see his face and hear his voice as he imparted bits of wisdom, like the fact that there is no "graduation fairy", into my life and into the lives of my classmates.
Some of my friends have heard this story more than once but, I will never forget having to call him a week before senior prom to ask for excused absences because I had the chicken pox! Yes, the chicken pox...He laughed and teased me saying 'Chicken pox? I thought only (little) kids got chicken pox!"
Thank you Mr. Garrett for your years of dedication and for all that you gave to CHS and the community of Concord.
We love you and you will be missed!

My deepest sympathy goes out to Mr. Garrett's family. I feel fortunate to have known such a wonderful man. Mr. Garrett was always a pleasure to be around at CHS.
Although it is little consolation at this sad time, it should be of some satisfaction to know that in his passing you can celebrate the end of a very long and productive life.
The measure of a life well-lived is not in how much money one has or what possessions they have accumulated, but rather through the lives they touched and the sorrow they leave behind. If the outpouring of sympathy on his loss is any indication, and it most certainly is, you can proudly and confidently say that his indeed was a life well-lived.
May you find peace and comfort in knowing that his loss is felt by all who knew and loved him.
