Donald McLeod Obituary

Donald Van Scott McLeod, a devoted husband, father, uncle and friend, passed away peacefully in the arms of his wife and daughter Sunday, July 17, 2016. He was 70 years young.

Van is survived by his wife of 36 years, Joan Goshgarian, and their daughter, Chelsea.

Van was born in Concord, to Scott and Pappy (van Pappelendam) McLeod in 1945. When Van was six, the family moved to Washington, D.C., where his father worked until appointed as the U.S. Ambassador to Ireland. The four years of living in the embassy were among Van's fondest memories; it was there he met Walt Disney, among other artists and politicians, setting the stage for his later work in life.

Van graduated from Parsons College and spent his early working years in the Boston area in the music industry as a lighting technician for rock concerts. He was fortunate to ride the famed music train "Festival Express," where Janis Joplin taught him the proper way to drink tequila: salt, shot, lime. He attended and worked at the Orson Welles Film School and as the booking agent for various acts. He gave Jay Leno his big break, something Jay remembered and thanked him for many years later – and Jay wasn't the only star to thank Van publicly for that kind of career boost. Others who had the pleasure of working with Van include Sarah Caldwell, Rachel Dratch, Tom Rush and countless others. Van founded Theatre 369 in Somerville and then returned home to New Hampshire.

In New Hampshire, Van was an artist-in-residence in schools and wrote a book about it, "No Stars." He founded First Night New Hampshire and the North Country Center for the Arts where he was producing director for seven years. He was appointed commissioner of the N.H. Department of Cultural Resources in 1992 and continued in that role until his death.

His role as commissioner allowed him to work with a variety of people and projects associated with of the arts, historical resources, library, and film and television divisions of his department. There he led a team of dedicated and knowledgeable experts, whom he treasured as colleagues and friends, working together to enhance the impact of arts and culture in the state.

Throughout his time in state government, Van was a tireless champion for culture in all of its forms. He was as well known for his humor and compassion as he was for his devotion to supporting culture statewide. Some of the initiatives, boards and committees Van was a member of include: N.H. Film Commission, Granite Hollywood, Celebrate N.H. for the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, N.H. Theatre Awards, Christa McAuliffe Planetarium Commission, N.H. Travel Council, International Alliance of First Night Celebrations, Old Man of the Mountain Memorial, Russian N.H. Society and other international cultural trade exchanges, N.H. Political Library, N.H. Land and Heritage Commission, Open Borders Festival, the Commissioners Brown Bag exchanges and the Capitol Center for the Arts.

Van was one of four American Fellows selected for the Salzburg Global Seminars, a gathering of writers, directors and producers from 51 countries,  on "The Power of Theatre: Artistry, Entertainment and Social Commentary."  In 2008, President Obama appointed Van to his National Arts Policy Committee.

Awards to Van included the Van McLeod Award, given annually by the N.H. Film Festival for outstanding contribution in film, television, entertainment and culture; the N.H. Theatre Association Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Plymouth State University N.H. Granite Award for outstanding public service.

While Van won many awards and accolades throughout his career, perhaps the award he cherished most was the recognition that he was a great guy, universally liked and respected.

Always working on an outside project to fuel his creativity, Van produced a video about Amos Tuck, "The Well Font-The Story of Tuck"; was director/producer of the documentary set in Northern Ireland, "Murals: Romanticizing the Violence," which won the Gold Aurora Award; and was a producer of "Agadez: The Music and the Rebellion" that tells the story of the Tuareg nomads of the Sahara and profiles the extraordinary Tuareg star, Bombino. He was currently involved in a start up initiative involving international film festivals and global network entertainment.

Van enjoyed fishing with his buddies, movie-going with friends and spending time with his Snowshoe brothers. His sense of humor and storytelling was legendary and enjoyed by all.

Van was predeceased by his father and mother, and his brother, Daniel McLeod. In addition to his wife and daughter, Van is survived by a sister, Anne Ryan of Canada, sisters-in-law, Diane Bourque of Massachusetts, Susan McGrew of Tennessee and Paula Smith of Virginia and their spouses, Debbie McLeod of Arizona, and beloved nieces and nephews Rachael, Sarah, John, Candice, Emily, Anna, Ben, Molly, Camilla and Erin and their spouses and children.

Memorial contributions to Van may be made to help finalize the current state project he was working on, a memorial statue for Gov. John Winant, at Park Street Foundation, 20 Park St., Concord, N.H. 03301.

Calling hours will be held Thursday, July 21, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Bennett Funeral Home.

The memorial service will be held Friday, July 22, at 1 p.m. at St. Paul's Church in Concord.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Bennett Funeral Home of Concord. Messages of condolence may be offered at bennettfuneral.com.

I'm so saddened to hear of Van's passing. Van was an inspiration and so supportive of the Arts and the artists. I count myself lucky to have known him and been encouraged by him over the years. I am so so sorry for your loss. And I am deeply sorry for the state of NH for our loss. Thank you for sharing him with us.
Kindest regards, Lesley Smith

As evidenced here and in many others' hearts and stories, Van was a force on earth and will be sorely missed. I rubbed shoulders with Van, albeit infrequently, through our shared roles involving arts education in New Hampshire. We also enjoyed talking about Iowa, which was a common intersection. His role in the arts very big and important. He got the big stage for a long time. Bravo, Van, bravo.

July 26, 2016

Van was a visionary, tireless and inspiring figure. His work in establishing and directing First Night NH put Concord on the state's cultural map. His counsel was invaluable to the editors of the Concord Historical Society in the researching and writing of the 20th Century history of Concord, "Crosscurrents of Change."
His death leaves a void in the creative and cultural life of the state.

Van was a tireless advocate for all of New Hampshire and provided constant support for so many organizations. We of Robie's Country Store Historic Preservation Corp. were recipients of his support and will always be grateful for his guidance and suggestions and overall help.

We will miss him, his counsel and his positive spirit.

Dear Joannie and Chelsea,
Knowing the deep sorrow I am feeling, I can't even begin to imagine yours. Van was a treasured friend and cohort. Some of my best memories and certainly most of my best adventures happened with him. He once made a dream come true and didn't even know it. We travelled the world together and had so so much fun. Actually, the most banal event was fun if Van was there. Anka mentioned his propensity for sticking a red light up his nose at the most inopportune times; making us all laugh and then acting like he was the only one who knew how to behave. He was the one and only person I could not only talk about wild and crazy ideas with, but he would actually support them. He was a beautiful human being with the heart of a lion, the energy and eyes of a five year old, the humor of a really bad comedian, and the spirit of Peter Pan. He never shirked his responsibilities and he loved both of you so fiercely. There is not a person he met that he didn't touch. I will miss him beyond comprehension. All my love to you both.

I only knew Van as a young boy. The McLeods lived on Ridge Rd. in our neighborhood, and our families had a few Thanksgivings together at the Grimes farm outside Concord. I happened upon the death notice in the Monitor, and told my wife, "I think I knew him long ago". My condolences to his family, especially his sister, Anne.

Dear Joan and Chelsea, I don't know if you will remember me, but I remember you all as patients at Dr. Maziarz's office. I always enjoyed when Van came in. He was funny, charming, a good soul...and had great oral hygiene! My heart is breaking for you. I know how very much you will miss him. He brought joy to all he came in contact. Now he will bring joy to all in heaven as he dances with the angels.
With heartfelt sincerity, Stevie Korb

Joan - from the Netherlands my heartfelt sympathy for you, your daughter and family. So many stories come to mind when I think of Van. A terribly delayed plane from Boston to Dublin, Van got the kids on the plane to start trick or treating, he had this bizarre red light stuck up his nose and people somehow got musical instruments and played them on board. 5 hours passed without any boredom. He was good, he was talented, he knew how to be vunerable and was always honest. Most of all, how he loved you both. I wish you strength. Love, Anka

Hi, Joanie,

When I was teaching at the New Hampton School in the mid-seventys, Van arrived at the school as Head of Dramatics and instituted open casting, which opened the door to me to be in 21 productions over a seven year span. He also cast me in the play "Bus Stop" down in Warner where I had other subsequent roles, and then at the Paper mill Theater in Lincoln in Oklahoma!" which led to roles in 9 other summer productions there over a nine year span. In short, he gave me, in effect, a second career (without pay) and, really, a second life. It's fair to say that Van had more effect on my adult life than any other human being. He had his finger in many pies, to everyone's benefit. We'll all miss him, but he left a great legacy.

To the McLeod Family, please accecpt my deepest sympathy. I had the plasure of working with Van for many years. His committment to public service is an inspiration to many people. NH will not be the same without him.

July 22, 2016

I'll remember Van as the spot-light guy for the Concord Players 75th Anniversary show. He tutored my, then, teen-age son on the second spot-light. During the course of the time spent in the loft of the city auditorium, Van shared his numerous stories with Harper and treated him like the man he would become, rather than a child. He showed deep respect to everyone. When I would run into Van at places like the post office, he would always enthusiastically greet me like I was just the person he wanted to talk to. During conversations, you never felt like Van needed or wanted to be anywhere else. He was a good person...an all around great guy. I am sorry for your loss and for the loss to the theatre community. Washington Irving wrote: "Sweet is the memory of distant friends! Like the mellow rays of the departing sun, it falls tenderly, yet sadly, on the heart." Van and I first met over 36 years ago. In spite of the intervening years (and miles), whenever and wherever Van and I reconnected, it was if time didn't matter. He was always an old friend. I'll miss you McLeod. My condolences to Joan, Kellie and family.

I will never forget Van approaching me, in a Mickey Rooney style, and saying, "Let's start a theater." And so the Kearsarge Theater Company was born in the mid 1970s. He was a born entertainer who evolved into an exceptional leader in the arts community, respected by all. My condolences to Joan and Chelsea.

Van was always the high point of any meeting during my 15 year tenure on the NH State Council on the Arts and currently on the State Council on Historical Resources. Van's smile and sense of humour instantly lightened the meeting, as did the excitement he often brought to us of the latest coup he had won for the state and arts community. These included establishing special relationships with Ireland and Quebec, and strengthening NH as a place for future film production to name just a few. Everyone in the arts will miss him.

The music community mourns Van's passing. Van was a friend, mentor, advocate, problem solver, enthusiast who supported the birth of organizations as avidly as he did the challenge of resurrection and growth. He showed up, made us laugh. New Hampshire communities owe a debt of gratitude for the light of Van McLeod. Love and condolences to our Joanie and family.

Van's memory is a blessing. He embraced life while he challenged it. He was an actor in life; he did not stand back and only watch. Van and I roomed at Parsons in a flat that embarrassed our mothers in Fairfield. He road the Festival Express and celebrated life and never got off - he became the conductor. I love him and miss him. Rest in peace.

Dear Joanie and Chelsea:
My condolences to you both.
Beginning with celebrate NH in 1999 to the Arts Council and Discovery Center meetings, Van and I were partners in crime at many fund raising events and were often separated because we were unfairly targeted as "troublemakers". I will miss his sense of humor and the wink of acknowledgement to comments only he and I understood.
RIP my friend.

July 20, 2016

Joan and Chelsea, Van was instrumental in helping my son Jeffrey, find a job in the field of film after graduating from college. Van told my son to follow his passion. He listened, learned and landed a successful job in Manhattan. No easy task as Van knew. After that, Van would ask about my son and ask him to call him to keep him updated on his projects. Not everyone would do that. I, as a father, am very grateful for Van's passion for the arts and my son's career. My heart felt sympathy is with your family. Salt, tequila, lime! Much love..John Reagan

I left New Hampshire 16 years ago. Ever since leaving I frequently have pangs that I miss certain things, the mountains, towns, friends and the wonderful people I worked with. Van is right on top of that list. He epitomized the leadership of the North Country and the state; but he was also my standard for being a caring thoughtful person. I loved working with him. I know all in NH will miss him deeply. I did as soon as I left.

I was so saddened to read of Van's passing. It's such a long long time since Van and I met in Boston...he was such an influence on me early on in my ongoing musical career...I imagine every artist he ever met felt the same encouragement, respect and joy in creation...I'm so glad we reconnected all those years later and am very sad that he and I won't get to have that cuppa like we'd planned...my deepest sympathy.

Van and I were college room mates along with Chris Cassatt in 1968 - 1969 at Parson's College located in Fairfield, Iowa. We had some great times together particularly on St. Patrick's Day. He would tell great stories about his time in Ireland shared along with a bit of Irish Whiskey and a few pints of Guinness. The picture was taken before a ski trip to Colorado. A genuine good human being and caring person.

My deepest sympathies to you and yours, Joan. How very blessed you have been to share an earthly life with such a stellar and talented man. Fondly recall Van facilitating tryouts for walk-on roles when John Houseman's The Acting company came to Concord in the '80s and encouraging me to go out for the maid's role in "Much Ado About Nothing." Van put his heart and soul into the Arts in NH and inspired many - myself included. No doubt Act II is just beginning for him in the world beyond. With love and light, Lynn

A great director, friend and human being. Gone too soon. Will be greatly missed.

July 19, 2016

Van was my first High School Theater teacher, when I was a student at The New Hampton School from '78-'82. He instituted the "Artist-in-Residence" program that introduced me to so many talented folks. Over the years, we kept in touch, and in the past few years we made it a point to get together on my annual family trip back to NH from GA.

Van's influence extends far beyond NH. From 2014 through the end of 2016, I will have directed 12 shows for 4 community theatre groups, one school, and one church here in the Atlanta area. This does not happen without the amazing introduction to the stage I was given by Van. Even my daughter's love of the stage would not have come without Van. I taught for three years, and my students were taught many of the same lessons I learned from Van.

He will be missed, but will never be forgotten.
