DAVID SCHWARTZ Obituary

David Schwartz Resident of El Cerrito David Schwartz was born to Samuel and Jeanette Schwartz in 1923 and raised in Brooklyn, New York. His early interest in science and chemistry landed him a spot in Brooklyn Technical High School where he was able to pursue these interests. Following high school, he served in the Army where he by chance passed through the San Francisco Bay Area. After the war, he convinced his parents and sister to relocate to California. He enrolled in UC Berkeley, under the GI Bill, to continue his study of chemistry. It was in chemistry class where he met and married Alice, his wife and lifelong partner. Following graduation, he and Alice started a business with just $720 and a desire to help improve scientific discovery. With their determination, the business survived and grew. Today Bio-Rad Laboratories employs 7000 people, has operations around the world and is a leader in providing life science research products and medical diagnostics to customers worldwide. David remained active in the business until the last, at 88 years of age. He is survived by Alice, his wife of 63 years, sons Norman and Steven, their spouses Adria and Amy, grandchildren Allison and Julia and his sister Ernestine Cohn and her family. He is predeceased by his parents and son Eric. He leaves a legacy of ongoing contribution to the scientific and medical communities.

My name is Andrew Charney, I am the CEO/Chairman of the Board of a small company in Pennsylvania called Scientific Systems, Inc. We are in the same industry as Bio-Rad and have had a business relationship with Bio-Rad for a number of years. During this time, I have had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Schwartz at trade shows and in his office in California. Since I was just starting Scientific Systems Inc. (SSI) and very inexperienced , which Mr. Schwartz could tell, I am sure he was nevertheless gracious and kind enough to give me sound business advice which I remember and implement to this day. Since all life has a sense of purpose my hope is to leave Scientific Systems, Inc. (SSI) as a legacy to that purpose as Mr. Schwartz has done with Bio-Rad. My sincere and best wishes to the Schwartz family and to all the lives he has touched.

Thank you Dave for your vision to build such a wonderful company in Bio-Rad! I had the pleasure of working for you and the company for 23 years. Over those years, I also had the pleasure of many conversations with you. What engaging, nice and most often very humorous conversations they were! You are such a treat and treasure to this world and you will be very much missed! One of a kind, for sure, that is what you are!
Here's to you David Schwartz..........to a wonderful man and to a life well lived!!

I am so sorry to learn of Mr. Schwartz's passing. I had the pleasure of working for his company at the old Ford plant. He was always very kind to everyone, no matter your position. My late mother came home one day and told me that her car had stopped at the shopping center and a nice man helped her. She said, "He gave me his card." And when I looked at the card, it belonged to Mr. Schwartz. I told her that he owned Bio-Rad. She said, "Really?? He was so nice." His legacy and many contributions will live forever.
