Jim Weyland Obituary
Resident of Concord
Jim Weyland of Concord, CA passed away peacefully on April 15th at the age of 74. He was surrounded by the love and support of his devoted family, friends, and DLS and SMC supporters by his side. Jim was born in Minnesota and moved to California when he was five years old. He is survived by his loving, longtime "lady friend" Anita Cardenas, along with his 94 year old mother, Florence and sister, Bev. Jim was the father of three children; Jimmie, Steven, and daughter, Terri (Mark). Jim was also immensely proud of his three grandchildren, Nick, Jamie, and Derek. Jim was preceded in death by his wife and mother of his children, Colleen.
Jim had been connected with the Christian Brothers for over a half century. After attending elementary school at the Berkeley campus, Jim graduated from Saint Mary's High School in 1956 and then Saint Mary's College in 1960. The high school bestowed upon him the Saint Miguel Febres Cordero Award for this work with their alumni board and twice he received the Saint Mary's College Alumni Association Recognition Award.
Jim was also very involved with De La Salle High School. He served on the chain crew for over 30 years, and along with his wife Colleen, ran the Over / Under Seven booth at the Fall Festival for several years, and stayed connected with the school long after his children graduated.
Jim began a thirty year career at Pac Bell prior to going to work at Saint Mary's College of California, where he served as an integral part of the Career Development Center for 18 years before retiring in 2009.
For those of you who had the privilege to know Jim, he was always known for his lively sense of humor and fun loving attitude. Jim tried never to miss any of his grandchildren's events. In his words, he said, "you can't recreate those moments".
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations to be made to the: Saint Mary's College; Gael Athletic Fund at P.O. Box 4300, Moraga, CA 94575.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00pm on Friday, April 19, 2013 at the Saint Mary's College Chapel, 1928 Saint Mary's Road, Moraga, CA 94556. Father Tom will be officiating.

Several of the legendary DLS Whitecoats were reminiscing about our fun times with Jim. He was so much fun to be with, especially at Artie´s and Rocco´s where a plaque is on the wall where he sat. His Mustang had Mr. Tools as his license plate. Rest in Peace, Jim, you´ll always be on the "box" with the DLS chain crew!

I remember so many good memories of Jim before, during and after DLS football games, often times at Arty´s Cocktail Lounge in Country Wood. Jim also held court on Fridays during the off Season at Rocco´s where there´s a plaque on the wall commemorating his memory. These Friday sessions were aptly named Choir Practice. We all miss Jim and his prized Mustang with the license plate inscription of Mr. Toolz. Go Spartans and Go Gaels!!!

We still miss Jim´s positive, cheerful presence in every situation....Rocco´s, Artie´s, on the sidelines with the Chain Crew, recommending outstanding candidates from the SMC Career Center and at every Gael Event from every Home Basketball Game to traveling to Oklahoma City and cheering our Gaels on. We still miss Jim and his sense of humor. Whenever we go to Rocco's, we're reminded of Jim's favorite place in the bar where now there's a plaque on the wall commemorating his spot. I grew up with Jim, Colleen & Bev as extended family of the Hales. I always looked up to Jim as a kind man & father. I'm so sorry to hear of his passing. My heart and prayers are with his family.

Our lives were enriched with Jim's presence. We knew him as part of both the De La Salle and Saint Mary's families. There are so many fond memories during games, dinners, parties and afterward games over cocktails. You can still go into Artie's and order a Weyland drink and you'll get exactly that......Jack Daniels and soda.. Everyone grew to love Jim, whether you knew him for 30 minutes or for 30 years. "Choir practice" at Rocco's on Friday Nights were classic when Jim "held court" and "directed the choir" all evening! All our love to Jim's family and especially to Anita. Terri, Nick & Derek, we are so sorry for your lost. I always enjoyed talking with Jim. He always made a point to come talk sports with me. He was so supportive of the sports programs at both Clayton Valley and De La Salle He is a very special person and will be greatly missed.

Jim was a great source of counsel and support as I navigated through changes in my career...strong messages delivered with grace and humor. He was good company at SMC basketball games too. His passing leaves a void in my relationship with Saint Mary's College.

I have never met Jim but i have had the pleasure of know his daughter Terri and his grandsons Nick and Derek for the last four years as a coach at Clayton Valley and if the the old adage is true that the apple doesnt fall far from the tree than i know Jim was a kind, giving and honest man who enjoyed life and those around him. My heart goes out to Terri, Mark, Nick, Derek and everyone in Jim's family and his good friend Tom Bruce. If i knew nothing else than that he was a Gael then i would know he was a great person.
