Resident of Livermore, CA
Monte Nichols, 76, was an avid, passionate gardener, a noted Mineralogist, and a retired Sandia National Lab Chemist and Materials Scientist.

In his retirement years, Monte was an avid reader and a loyal patron of the Livermore Public Library. He could often be seen walking with his wife, Barbara, around Livermore.

There is a long and tedious discussion in Plato's Protagoras in which Socrates tries to support the statement "Hard it is for a man to be truly good." Maybe for Socrates. Not for Monte.
Monte was a good friend growing up on Silver Street in Tucson, and continued to be thereafter.

Thanks to Monte, I have a garden FULL of garlic! And I will never forget the Tahitian squash he shared with me. He was fun and funny, and I loved speaking with him over at Hertz. Barbara and family, my sincerest condolences go out to you. May God bless...

In the early-to-mid 1980s, Monte was one of three joint owners of "Merry Tiller" the rototiller. The other two were myself and Bob Carling. Alas, Merry also passed away. Reminds me of the song about the old man whose "clock stopped, never to go again, when the old man died." Farewell, Monte.

Monte was a long-time good friend, mentor and colleague of mine -- who always found the time to chat and to help me out -- and did so with a big smile and a whole lot of expertise and practical 'know-how'. And he did this not only for me but for many others. He will be greatly missed.

With sympathy and love,
John (Vitko)
