James Turnbull Obituary

James L. "J.L." Turnbull

CANAL LEWISVILLE: James Louis "J.L." Turnbull, 91, of Canal Lewisville passed away at 6:52 P.M., Saturday, July 9, 2011 at Coshocton County Memorial Hospital. Born December 2, 1919 in Conesville, he was the son of the late Raymond and Margaret (Jones) Turnbull.

James served during World War II as a Tech 5 in the U. S. Army from October 7, 1944 to August 11, 1946 with overseas duty as a Construction Machine Operator in Occupational Japan where he was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon along with other military awards.

"J.L." was a foreman at the Coshocton County Highway Department, retiring after many years of employment. He formerly had been employed at the Clow Corporation and was a locomotive fireman for the railroad.

James was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post #1330 and a member of the American Legion Post #65. He was a former member of the Elks Lodge and will be remembered for his love to do yard work and mow grass.

On April 15, 1939, he married Helen Elizabeth Phillips. The couple celebrated 72 years of marriage this year.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Helen; are three granddaughters; a great-grandson; a great-granddaughter and a great-great-grandson; a half-brother, Duane (Carol)Turnbull of Ocala, Florida; a half-sister, Rita Ann Turnbull of Detroit, Michigan; several nieces and nephews; and a host of special friends.

Preceding James in death was the couple's only son, James "Jimmy" Turnbull; sisters, Thora Mae Aler and Geneva M. Dovenbarger; and a half-brother, Raymond Turnbull.

Services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, July 13, 2011, at the Free Funeral Home in Coshocton with Pastor Charles Warren officiating. Interment will follow at Canal Lewisville Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the Coshocton County Veterans Council.

Calling hours will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M., Wednesday prior to the funeral service at the Free Funeral Home.
