Richard E. Bartlebaugh

COSHOCTON: Born January 13, 1924 in Springfield, Ohio to David Westley and Faye (Byers) Bartlebaugh, Richard Edwin Bartlebaugh passed away at home on March 23, 2014 at the age of 90.

He graduated from Springfield High School and Washington and Lee University with a B.S. in Commerce. In college he was a member of Beta Theta Pi and Phi Eta Sigma Fraternities.

He enlisted in the U.S. Marines, but transferred to the U.S. Navy in 1944 and was sent to midshipman's school at Columbia University where he was commissioned. He then joined the destroyer escort U.S.S. MUIR (DE-770) becoming gunnery officer until his separation from the service in May 1946 as a Lt. (j.g.). His ships wartime activities involved escorting convoys of merchant ships to the Mediterranean and participating in anti-submarine warfare in the North Atlantic.

In May 1948, he married Jean Morner who preceded him in death in March 2005. Prior to moving to Coshocton (Ohio) in 1976, they lived in Pleasant Ridge, Michigan where he was president and owner of Acoustics Manufacturing Corporation in Detroit. After that company was sold, he became vice president and general manager of Steel Ceiling, Inc. until he retired in 1989.

In Michigan, he was president of the Pleasant Ridge Club, chairman of the Pleasant Ridge recreation commission, a member of the downtown Detroit Rotary Club, and a deacon, trustee, and elder in the Drayton Avenue Presbyterian Church. Since moving to Ohio he has been a member and past president of the Coshocton Rotary Club, a member and past chairman of the Salvation Army advisory board, a ten-year member of the Muskingum Area Alcohol and Drug Addiction Board, past chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Coshocton Presbyterian Church, past president of the Coshocton Town and Country Club, past member of the Board of Trustees of the Coshocton Foundation, and a member of the Sea Pines Country Club in Hilton Head, South Carolina.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Pyles, and a brother, Warren B. Bartlebaugh.

Surviving are children: David E. Bartlebaugh of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Ann B. Naubert (Rob) of Rochester Hills, Michigan, Marilyn B. Branham of Roswell, Georgia, and Claire B. Newman (Harry) of Northport, New York. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren: Bryan Hlavaty, Megan Hlavaty Calderon (Alex), Erin Hlavaty, Matthew Bartlebaugh, James Bartlebaugh, Eric Bartlebaugh, Cole Branham, Kelly Branham, Austin Branham, Shaw Newman, and Scott Newman.

Visitation will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at the Presbyterian Church of Coshocton, 142 N. 4th St., followed by a Memorial Service at Noon (12:00pm). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Abiding Memorial Fund of the Presbyterian Church of Coshocton or to the Coshocton Foundation.
