Joe Dalton Cranfill was born August 30, 1945 in Rotan, Texas and passed away peacefully in his home on September 8, 2014 at the age of 69 after a short illness. Joe served his country in the Army during the Vietnam War building air fields. Upon his discharge he served his community as a law officer for Harris County, Humble Police, and later was a detective for the Montgomery County Sherriff's department. His favorite job was "playin in the dirt" with big boy toys when he was employed by the Montgomery County Airport. He was known by friends for his dry sense of humor and his consistent integrity. He was truly one of a kind, respected and loved by all who knew him. Joe would be the first to share his love for Christ and for his family. He will be deeply missed. Joe is preceded in death by his son, Joe Feldon Cranfill of Willis, TX and father, Kenneth Cranfill of Colorado City, TX. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Susan, grandson, Dalton Cranfill, mother, Lorene and husband Bill Freeman of Houston, TX, sister, Leta and husband Billy Kavanaugh, sister, Pat and husband Mike Brown of Edgewood, TX, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, September 10, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. in Garden Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Kenny Lewis, Troy Carlile, Chad Carlile, Jay Carlile, Billy Kavanaugh and Dalton Cranfill. I was deeply saddened to read that Joe had passed away. He was a dear friend from the "old days" at the Montgomery County Courthouse. I worked in the D.A.'s office and Joe was a Sheriff's deputy. He was the ultimate peace officer. He would light up the room when he came into the office, even though he was there to file a report or meet with an attorney or investigator. I later had a personal job related problem and Joe was on the phone as soon as he found out, with words of encouragement and support. The last time I saw him was at his son's funeral, and even in his time of sorrow, he was strong. I will miss you, Joe Cranfill, and will remember the old times. Kathy (Olson) Fail

What an amazing man you are Brother. What precious memories I will carry with me. I knew from the beginning of our journey we were kindred spirits. How I will miss our laughter, funny stories, teasing, and deep conversations of faith. I know how you looked forward to the profound love of heaven as you took the hand of Christ. What a celebration as you reunited with Joe, your son and my mom. She loved you so much. I know you knew that. Your joy is eternal now. I look forward to the time we'll see each other again. Until that time I will hold you close in my heart.
