Lynda and Family,
It has been over two years since Steve died. I think of him often and would meet him for lunch when I came to town from Seattle. I grew up with Steve, I am his cousin Bobby Riger. He and our grandpa, (Francis Riger) would go rabbit hunting together when we could. Although I am younger than Steve, I always looked up to him and was proud to know him. I am so sorry for your loss and the world is a lesser place without him. God bless you all.

Never met a nicer man an my entire life. But, if you were unfortunate enough to have Bag's as the cop investigating you in a criminal case, you should have just plead guilty and did your time.

My thoughts and prayers go to Linda, Sean, Chris and their family. As time passes and the sorrow fades perhaps they can take comfort knowing I consider having Coach Bagbey as my ball coach and later as my friend as one of the absolute best things to ever happen to me. He was and will remain one of the most positively influential men I will ever meet. I was blessed to have known him and to have him take such an interest in me and my buddies. Something tells me a lot of folks can say that.
Throughout the 1970's I had the honor and pleasure of being coached and mentored by many of the finest gentlemen in Evansville. Coach Bagbey was at the top of that list. He reinforced the lessons of honesty, integrity and hard work my parents were teaching me. He also instilled in us the value of persistence, commitment and fairness. As I recall he was the first person to ever tell me "You either have character or you are a character."
And he taught my teammates and I to "do the right thing not the easy thing." Before it was a cliche' he taught us that there is no "I" in team, and that subjugating your own desires and your own ego to the greater goal of the team results in, yes, championships.
And, of course, he was there for me in a major league way when my grandfather passed when I was 14 years old. In pretty short order he was instrumental in turning me and a ragtag group of knuckleheads into pretty darn good men.
Years later we became friends, but I could never call him anything but "Coach" or "Coach Bagbey." I told him it was his fault for teaching me so much about respect. He continued to do favors for me and my family for years. He was ALWAYS there when we needed him.
He and I would meet when I was in town, as we did a couple years ago. Fittingly we met at a Memorial High football game at Reitz Bowl. As was our custom we reminisced about the good old days and updated each other on our families. We chatted a bit about the success his book was having. And he told me once again "I wish you had seen my boys play ball." As usual I told him "probably not as much as I do." I am incredibly sorry that was the last time I saw Coach Bagbey, but rest assured my buddies and I thank our lucky stars we had Coach to instill in us the virtues we so needed.
He will live on through his honesty, his integrity, his sense of humor, the value he placed on fairness and loyalty... indeed all his undeniable attributes will live on in through the legions of friends, coaches, teachers, public officials and others that have been touched by his influence.
Rest in Peace, Coach. Your rest is well earned and well deserved.

I met steve when I was in high school when he came to my rescue after a horrible family tragedy. Steve made sure to send me emails and messages often to check in to see that I was doing okay and made it known he was there if ever needed. He did this for over ten years now. I'm going to miss this check-ins but will cherish the ones I have saved. He is and was the example of what police force should be. I'm so sorry to see this hero in disguise go. He was one of the best

It was always a joy to see Steve at family gatherings. I am sad knowing I won't see him at another one. Steve frequently of others. I recall he made a point of coming to visit me when I was in high school, to talk to me about something sad going on in my life. The only consolation I can think of with his passing is that he is now with Jesus, Aunt Anna Marie, Uncle Jim and our grandparents.
You will be missed Steve by so many.
Love, Cousin Patty Riger
