Patricia McCormack Obituary

Patricia S. McCormack
Patricia Seger McCormack, a longtime Westport resident, died in Norwalk, Connecticut, on July 26, 2017. She was 90 years old.
Pat McCormack was born in Pittsburgh in 1927. Upon graduation from the University of Pittsburgh in 1949, she embarked on a career in journalism that spanned more than fifty years, much of it as a nationally published columnist and senior editor for United Press International. Following her retirement from UPI, she worked locally as a reporter for the Greenwich Citizen and Fairfield Citizen newspapers in the early 2000s. Women journalists were by that time not unusual. But for much of her career, and especially at the national level, she was a pioneer. In announcing the acquisition of her career papers in 2014, the Columbia University Rare Book and Manuscript Library rightly termed her "a trailblazing newspaperwoman."
Pat was married to Don McCormack, also a career journalist and writer, in 1951. They moved to Westport in 1961. Pat loved the outdoors, walking at Compo Beach and gardening. In later years she volunteered at the Westport Nature Center and joined the Westport Sunrise Rotary Club.
Pat is survived by her son Chris, daughter-in-law Sarah Doyle McCormack, and grandchildren Ben and Eli McCormack, who reside in Trumbull.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 2, 2017, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 661 Old Post Road, Fairfield, Connecticut, with a reception to follow in the Parish Hall. Interment will be private and there will be no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in memory of Pat McCormack to the Legal Defense Fund of the Society for Professional Journalists, www.spj.org.

When I was assembling a staff for a new weekly newspaper--- the Greenwich Citizen -- in the summer of 2002, I took a chance on a 75-year-old reporter named Pat McCormack. She possessesd the credentials, determination and pluck to succeed, and so she did.
For nearly seven years, Pat was an integral part of our success -- indeed, she won the Citizen's first award from the Connecticut Press Club -- and endeared herself to those she touched with her warmth and writing skills. She was an inspiration to all of us.
My dear Pat, RIP.
