Gilbert Standley Obituary

STANDLEY Gilbert Scott Standley, age 82, resident of the Nichols section of Trumbull since 1939, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 20, 2012 at his home. He was the beloved husband of the late Miriam Sampson Bachlechner. Born in Raynham, MA on September 29, 1929 he was a son of the late Lester and Margaret Ratter Standley. He was a graduate of the Newtown Hawley High School of Agriculture class of 1949. Gil retired from the Trumbull Parks Department after 38 years as Park Superintendant. He was a life member of the Trumbull Historical Society, Nichols 4H Fire Patrol for two years, past Chief of the Nichols Fire Dept. after 63 years of service, America St. John's Lodge # 8 A.F. A.M. for 58 years, Harmony Grange # 92 of Monroe and a life member of the Nichols United Methodist Church. Mr. Standley enjoyed gardening and planting veggies, he loved to watch his friends and the little neighborhood kids help themselves to his crop which he placed in his wheel barrel in front of his home. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him, especially his sister, Barbara Standley of Nichols, his brother Lester and his wife Nancy of SC, step son, William Bachlechner and his wife Susan of Trumbull, step son in-law William Girvan of FL and his sister in-law Catherine Standley of Milford. He is also survived by many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will take place on Monday, July 2, 2012 at 11:00 am at the Nichols United Methodist Church, with Pastor Joseph Piccirillo officiating. Interment will follow with full military honors in Nichols Village Cemetery. Friends may greet the family on Sunday, July 1, 2012 from 3 to 7 pm at the Dennis & D'Arcy Abriola & Kelemen Funeral Home, 2611 Main Street, Stratford. My mother, Rita Anderson, worked with Gil's wife Miriam at the Trumbull Town Hall. Gil would share the bounty of his vegetable garden with us. What a lovely gentleman Gil was. He will be missed.
