Russell Moore Obituary

Moore, Russell
Russell Lee Moore, better known in the broadcast industry as Russ "The Weird Beard" Knight, passed away on Friday, October 12, 2012. Russell was a radio personality at many stations throughout the United States, but his most memorable stints were as The Weird Beard on KLIF in Dallas and KILT in Houston, Texas. At KLIF, he was the self-proclaimed "savior of Dallas radio;" at KILT, he introduced The Beatles to Houston in 1965. He later went on to program the "Make Believe Ballroom" with William B. Williams at WNEW in New York City, and was inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame in 2003. One of his greatest interviews was with the late crooner Perry Como, who always wanted to trim his beard, as Mr. Como had been a barber before starting his musical career. While on the radio, his wit, humor, and compassion enhanced any city or town he worked in. He loved New York City and music, especially The Bee Gees, and disco-era music always got him up and dancing. Russell loved the Yankees and the Dallas Cowboys. His greatest joys were his sons and grandchildren, and his two cats, Jasper and Pavarotti. He loved animals, and his friends referred to him as St. Francis of Assissi. He is survived by his beloved wife, Roseann; his sons Stephen and Richard, from his previous marriage to the former JoBeth Garrett of Corpus Christi, Texas; his stepsons, Jason and Brandon; and his numerous grandchildren. Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, October 16, 2012 at 9:30 a.m. in the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Road, Trumbull, and at 10:30 a.m. in St. Andrew Church, Bridgeport for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family. Relatives and friends may call on Monday from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Center for Domestic Violence, 158 Main Street, Ansonia, CT 06401. To light a virtual candle, visit us at www.abriola.com.

Obviously Russ has been gone for about 8 and a half years. I made a home made CD featuring some things I used from stock KLIF-Dallas radio in the early 60s, featuring the Weird Beard, as well as my daughter on tape when she was not quite 7. I am listening to it on 5/25/2021 as I type this. Russ was a real guy. Who knew? Thanks for your contributions to Dallas and American radio, Russell Lee Moore. Life can be a strange ride at times, as well as magical and wonderful. Your magical voice is cutting through the ages and will continue to do so. Blessings to all of your family, both in your life and in radio.

I'm 67 years old and have not heard any other radio personalities equal to THE WEIRD BEARD!!! He made the listener feel like he was their friend...important to teenagers ! Russ and I worked together at WDJZ in Bridgeport Ct and I later got him a morning show and PD gig at WELI Hamden Ct . HE WAS BY FAR ONE IF THE BEST IN THE BIZ . He hired me at WDJZ as Sales Manager and our partnership and bond went on for years. One morning he had a dentist appt and could not finish his show. Without any knowledge of a radio studio he sat me in the control room put me on the air and left! He told me I was the best Raw talent he had ever heard and gave me an on air shift to save the station money! This incident gave me the confidence to do many things in life. I recently heard if his passing while surfing the web here in Fl. All I can say is that I lost a true friend and brother. To Rose and family... God bless..and let the Weird Beards gentleness and kindness be passed down for generations to come .Love ya Beard put a good word in for me in Heaven.. We will meet again.

I was in high school when he was at KLIF and I loved his show. Somehow I got the phone number to the DJ room (is it called the studio room?) & sometimes I'd call and he'd talk to me when the records were playing. I was thrilled that he would do that! I'll never forget The Weird Beard. He was truly one of a kind. To his family please accept my deepest sympathy.

Hi Daddy...I miss you! Thanks for letting me watch "20 Million Miles to Earth" on your lap late one night in 1966. Mom would've been mad if she'd found out!

What a legend. I grew up in Dallas, but well past the KLIF era - but I was introduced to him through the KLIF Cruisin' album, in which through that, and the many airchecks that are out there, will ensure his legacy lives on. They just don't make 'em like they used to.

GOD BLESS YOU. RUSS IS AT REST AND OUT OF PAIN AND RESTING IN GOD'S LOVING ARMS.

"Russ" was, most certainly, legendary here in Houston (and, of course, in Dallas) radio. I had the distinct pleasure of sitting next to him when he was inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame (here in Houston) in 2003!
