Harry Everette Harris, 85, formerly of Tanglewood Drive, Elizabeth City, N.C., died Wednesday, March 15, 2006, in the Albemarle Hospital. Born in Elizabeth City, N.C., he was a former resident of Portsmouth, Va., and moved back to Elizabeth City in 1973. He was the son of the late Christopher Hilliard Harris and Cora Morgan Harris, and was the widower of the late Vera Lamb Harris, having been married over 60 years. Mr. Harris was retired from the Methods and Standards Division of the Norfolk Naval Shipyard as head technical illustrator. He was also retired owner and operator of the Harris Signs and Graphics. He was a member of the Pasquotank County Ruritan Club, a Baptist, and a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He received several awards during his career for designing the Naval Shipyard Seal and the Tidewater Tides insignia. He also was awarded the Alfred Khouri Memorial Award for a painting of the old Princess Anne Courthouse. He also won an award for the logo design for the USS Hammerhead Submarine. Mr. Harris is survived by a daughter, Barbara H. Gorrell and husband, Peter, of Chesapeake, Va.; two sons, Hillie E. Harris and companion, Ethel, of Yorktown, Va., and Randy C. Harris and wife, Deborah, of Elizabeth City, N.C. He is also survived by one sister, Callie H. Jones of Elizabeth City, N.C.; four grandchildren, Philip Todd Harris and wife, Tammy, Matt Chandler Harris and wife, Ami, Eric Christopher Harris and Mark Adam Harris; and three great-grandsons, Philip Todd Harris II, Jeremy Michael Harris and Julian Claxton. He was preceded in death by five brothers and a sister, Calvin Harris, Garland Harris, Hilliard Harris, Cecil Harris, Twiddy Harris and Isabel Forbes. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, March 18, 2006, at noon in TwifordÕs Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, N.C., by the Rev. F. Joe Griffith. Burial will follow in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives at Twiford Funeral Home this evening from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. and at other times at the residence of his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Randy C.
