Joe Denk obituary, 1939-2010

Joe Denk Obituary

Joe Denk, 71, a 48-year resident of Manhattan Beach, passed away suddenly on December 6, 2010. Denk, a retired aerospace engineer, worked at Honeywell where he was a prolific inventor and part of the team that designed the Lunar Rover Module. Denk was born in Budapest, Hungary, May 2,1939. He was a freedom fighter during the Hungarian Revolution. At age 17 he escaped and came to the United States where he was proud to become an American citizen. His education included a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Northeastern University and a master's degree in electrical engineering from USC. He was also a member of the Naval Air Reserves. Denk, who competed in water polo in the Senior Olympics, was the ultimate outdoors man - a spear fisherman, diver, tennis player, surfer, skier, water polo competitor, beach volleyball player and an aerobatic pilot who often did air shows for friends. Denk is survived by his wife, Barbara (Gidget) Jacobson-Denk with whom he spent 44 wonderful years and by many, many friends who will miss him dearly. The couple was a longtime fixture south of the Manhattan Beach pier as part of the "Wall People". Denk will be missed but his friends will take comfort in the fact that he lived life to the fullest on his own terms. Denk also is survived by family in Hungary. A celebration of Denk's life is planned for January 15, 2011. In lieu of flowers, donations can be to the US Olympic Water Polo team or the charity of your choice. Remember Joe like it was yesterday. Very inventive and always there for you. He was like a Tesla, always thinking new and innovative ways to stay ahead of the crowd.
Hard to believe it has been that long since Joe passed from us.

Gig: I am so sorry to hear about Joe. Just reading the many tributes brings back memories of life on the strand back in the 60's. I also remember the days surfing the pier and talking about water polo with Joe. I also remember how my Dad and Kay would talk about Joes stunts over the ocean out front of the house. You and Joe have been long time great friends. I will all ways remember the memories and good times.

Dear Gidget,

I still can't believe what has happened. I always thought that Joe was going to live forever because he was so full of life. I feel as if I had lost my father. He taught me so much about life. If it hadn't been for him, I would have never become the person I am now. He was such a generous Man. I have so many beautiful memories about him and of course about you, Gigdet. I just hope that you will get through this! Take care! Love, Orsi and the Golyas

Gidget, I was shocked when my mom, Emi Yonesaki, told me of Joe's passing. I remember him as an active, healthy friend. Do you remember spending New Years in Hawaii with me and my family? That was such a long time ago but I always thought of you and Joe and the wonderful life you had. You were a terrific team - so fun and loving - you have a liftime of memories to carry you through the tough times. Take care of yourself, Gidget. Love and Aloha. Brenda

My family met Joe at San Clemente State Park around 1963 where we were camping. He and his friends had a van. Paul (Bagles), Harry, and Joe. They had written all over their car. Sayings such as “Lady, your daughter might be in here”. I was 13 then. Joe later bought me my first bikini. The deal was I had to model it for him. When I walked outside the dressing room, he exclaimed, "WOW". He was best man in my father’s wedding, early 70’s. I saw him at the beach over the years, and more recently looked he and Gidget up when in town. There I was in the doctor's office yesterday reading Gidget’s Christmas card, tears welling up in my eyes. When some people pass, you think, gee that's too bad. I thought, why didn't I get to see him just one more time. Why didn't I call him. It's a hard fact that life isn't forever. He was an extraordinary man. I can’t imagine how difficult this must be for you Gidget. My heart felt sympathy. I'll miss Joe.

Dear Gidget,

I just received a card from you about Joe's passing, and I feel tremendous emptiness. I know I have not been out there with the wall boys for a while, but it hurts me to realize that I no longer will be able to see him and talk to him.
I can see Joe flying high up in the sky with his trade-mark smile, a smile of confidence and ever lasting spirit of joy. His life has enlightened all of us, and I am very honored to have known him.
From now on, I will see the reflection of Joe in you, Gidget, with all the goodness in life.
I will see you soon and please take care.

Dearest Bobbi, I received your card today with the news that Joe had passed on. I only met Joe once all those years ago when I visited you in California - and from that one visit, I really liked him - more than that I know how much you loved him and that you were very happy together - so, for that, I felt really sad at his very untimely passing and for your profound loss. I hope you have loving people around you and know that I love you too - your kid cousin who used to visit you in New Jersey - I love you, Bobbi - always have, always will - Nancy
