Warren Gillette Obituary

Boulder is a sadder place, now that Warren Gillette has died. He was a fine gentleman, a fine physician, and a fine painter. We shall miss him. He loved being a doctor at the Boulder Community Hospital from 1950 until 1985. He adored traveling to France, Greece and around the world on freighters and once on Semester-at-Sea. Warren Gillette was born September 7, 1920 in Los Angeles to Blenda Amelia Olson Gillette and Horace Errol Gillette. He reached the amazing age of 94 and how pleased he was with his longevity, and the rich experiences in life. Warren graduated L.A. High in 1938, CalTech in chemical engineering in 1942. He enlisted in the Navy submariners and served in the Pacific from 1942 to 1945. His submarine was off the coast of Tokyo at war's end. Warren then went to George Washington Medical School and graduated in 1950. He interned at the Navy Hospital, Newport, Rhode Island. He married Elizabeth Estes in 1944 and they had three sons: Warren Jr., Owen and Christopher. They all came to Boulder in 1951 where Warren set up his General and Family Practice. Warren and Elizabeth divorced in 1976. During the Vietnam war in 1973, he volunteered his services to the care of the Vietnamese. He was glad to have served there and to have had the opportunity to diagnose various Asian diseases. Warren also went to the Sahara desert for a solar eclipse and was amazed when the African soldiers dropped their guns and ran for shelter. In 1980, he married Cintra McIlwain and they sailed on Semester-at-Sea for three months. They traveled the world extensively and joyously for the next 35 years, and loved playing tennis, reading and painting together. Warren is survived by Warren Jr. and Owen, Dylan and Sukey Williams, Kate Remley and four grandchildren: Mary Laura, Eric, David, and Amy, and Li'l Owen. Warren Gillette lived a full and meaningful life, full of hard work, adventure and family. He felt being a doctor was lots of fun and a challenge. His kindness, thoughtfulness, and great gifts will be a huge loss for all who loved him.

Dr. Gillette was my childhood doctor, he was an educator as well as fine Physician. His smile and enthusiasm for life will never be forgotten. "The Shadow of a man is not cast by the strength of his back nor the dexterity of his mind, But by the light that shines in every heart fortunate enough to have known his spirit. His character goes beyond his time, sturdying the will of those who follow in his remembrance." With sincere condolences in the passing of a very dear man. Babette

Thank you to everyone, for your kind words about my Grandad. It is wonderful to see how he has touched so many lives. We have been working hard to obtain his discharge papers from the US Navy, unfortunately it is a longer process than we had hoped for. We would like to remember him with honors, so we are postponing his memorial till we can receive the documents. Thank you and I hope more people will continue to share their memories of my Grandad.

Dr. Gillette was a kind and gentle man and was everything you would wish for in a Family Doctor. Our three children knew him from birth until he retired. He was trustworthy and you felt comfortable with his his professionalism after every visit. He will be missed.

Our family Dr. for many years who delivered all 3 of our kids.....he was ahead of his time in that he was homeopathic oriented, at least in our experiences with him. A kind and gentle soul who truly cared. We thought so highly of him that we named our son after him.

Dr Gillette was my family doctor from the time I was 6 years old until he retired. I always trusted, loved and admired him and I still believe he saved the life of my youngest son when he was an infant. Go with God Dr. Gillette and travel the places we all hope to see someday. Condolences to his family.

Dr. Gillette, was a wonderful man. I have very fond memories of going to see Dr. Gillette, when I began playing sports in Junior High to get my physical & he would always ask what positions I played & how I thought our team would do in the upcoming season. Just a very genuine, quality person. He will be greatly missed. Thank you, Dr.Gillette!
