Dorothy Cruthers Obituary

Dorothy M Cruthers was born September 10, 1929 in Kettering, North Hamptonshire, England and died peacefully at home August 11, 2016. Dorothy, an only child, enjoyed a happy childhood and was spoiled by her mother and grandparents. She married Larry Cruthers, a serviceman, in 1956 and moved to the United States. They divorced the following year. She always lived in Boulder - first on Pleasant Street, then many years at 1127 Broadway, before moving into her beloved apartment on 14th Street. She was proud that she did not learn to drive and never owned an automobile. Her first job in Boulder was teaching sewing classes, she took in work as a seamstress for several years, and Dorothy also worked at Dug Out Cleaners. In the late 50's she started working at the University of Colorado, for all of that time employed at the CU Book Store in the UMC before her retirement in 1997. In her near 40-year career she was fondly remembered by many generations of CU students. Dorothy was proceeded in death by her beloved mother, Winifred Chapman, and will be remembered by a wide circle of friends in Boulder. A future Memorial Service is being planned. Contributions in her memory may be made to Boulder County Care Connect Carry-out Caravan, P.O. Box 3675, Boulder, CO 80307, www.careconnectbc.org or TRU Community Care, 2594 Trailridge Drive East, Lafayette, CO 80026, www.trucare.org. I worked with Dorothy at the bookstore in 1964-66 and again in 1972-74. I always enjoyed her humor and good spirits. She was one of a kind, and I'm sorry I didn't learn of her death till months later. Rest in peace, Ducky!

My Dear Friend,
I've been meaning to call you, but alas I've discovered you are no longer here with us. I am so saddened to learn of this and will miss you terribly. You have been such a good friend to me for the past 23 years. I will miss your good sense of humor and hearing you laugh! I am so glad you had a chance to meet Marie the last time I was out visiting in Colorado. Thank you for everything, my dear friend. I will think of you often.

I cannot express what a blessing you were and are to me and my family. Although you are dearly missed, we look forward to seeing you again where it will be all smiles and hugs. Rest in peace sweet Dorothy.

Dorothy was deeply loved by everyone who knew her or knew of her here at Boulder County CareConnect. I will always remember her lively spirit, independence, positive attitude, friendliness, and humor. We still have a large portrait of Dorothy smiling (laughing?) on our wall. We will miss the beautiful Dorothy Cruthers. Rest in peace.

I am blessed to work for an organization (Boulder County CareConnect) that helped Dorothy in her later years - delivering groceries to her and taking her to medical appointments. She was one of the most lively and lovely clients we have ever had and she brightened our days as much as we did hers. I am honored to have known her; she was one of a kind!
