Thomas Yock Obituary

Thomas Joseph Yock died on September 9, 2017 at home after a valiant 4 month struggle with cancer. Our beloved husband, father, Papa, brother, brother-in-law, and uncle left us too soon. We know that Tom will continue to fill our broken hearts with his enduring love, kindness, integrity, compassion, gentleness, and boundless joy. Tom was born February 27, 1948 to Carl George Yock and Marie (Pogioli) Yock in Pekin, Illinois. On August 8, 1970 he married Patricia (Kauth) Yock in Mundelein, Illinois, and they recently celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary. Tom graduated from Spalding Institute in Peoria, IL in 1966 and Loyola University Chicago in 1970. He received his PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York in 1975. He spent 4 years on the faculty of the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. Tom retired from the University of Colorado's Wardenburg Student Health Center after 36 years in 2015. His career was dedicated to teaching, mentoring, and counseling students. Tom shared his passion for music, gardening, fly fishing, camping, hiking, and canoeing with family and friends. He loved taking his children and grandchildren on adventures to the mountains. Tom's parents preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife Pat; son, Matthew; daughter, Sarah; grandchildren, Brian, Kyle, Alicia, and Alec; sister, Mary Kay (husband Tom); nieces and a nephew; and many other relatives (including ones in Italy and Austria) and friends. A Memorial Mass celebrating Tom's life will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, September 19th at St. Thomas Aquinas University Parish, 904 14th Street in Boulder followed by a reception in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Tom's name to: Robert D. Sutherland Memorial Foundation, PO Box 1169, Niwot, CO 80544, or a charity of your choice.

I am sad to learn of his passing. He helped me through some difficult times when I was a student at CU. His wisdom and kindness remain in my heart. My deepest sympathy to his loved ones.

The world has lost a kind and compassionate man. While it's been years since the "Rochester time", Tom and Pat were the center of our circle of friends there. Hosting a Thanksgiving dinner with 25 friends as if it was no big deal! My heart is heavy with the thought of the sorrow Pat, Matt and Sarah are feeling. Hugs to you all.

I was so saddened to hear of the death of my friend Tom. . My love and heart goes out to you Pat as well as your family. You and Tom were there for me in ways you probably don't even know. . It seems like such a short time since we loved learned laughed and played together. Tho we did not keep up with each other and have not spoken in years you were always in my heart. I don't speak lightly when I say that Tom is the kind of friend and brother that has and always will endure. I know that this is always said but I mean from the heart that if I can do anything to be helpful I will.

Tom was exactly 2 weeks older than me--we used to laugh about getting older. It makes me sad to think he didn't have as many years as he surely deserved. I loved working with him at Wardenburg way back in the 80s---he was kind and perceptive and had the very best laugh. I haven't seen him in a very long time, but the world was a better place with him in it. Pat and Matt and Sarah--I am so sorry for your loss of such a special nice guy....generous in all ways. It was so clear how much he loved you. Tom made me smile--I will hold that in my heart.

Tom was one of the kindest person I have had the opportunity to work with. He offered curbside advise to anyone who would stop and bend his ear. His mind was guided by his heart. Both huge.
We'll miss you Tom.
