Victor "Leon" Fann passed away at his home in Woodland on Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2011, due to a cerebral vascular accident. He was 85 years old. Born in Muskogee, Okla., on Nov. 17, 1925, to Jordan Fann and Pauline Mitchell, Leon proudly called himself an "Okie from Muskogee."
In February 1944, Leon was drafted by the U.S. Navy where he served two years during WWII aboard the aircraft carrier USS Admirality Islands, seeing action in the Pacific at Okinawa and Iwo Jima. After his discharge from the Navy, Leon and Cletha settled in Woodland in 1946, where they have made their home for the past 65 years. Leon worked at Orrick Truck Terminal for 31 years, the last 25 as owner. He ventured into farming with Kay Sagara, starting S&F Farms. That partnership lasted 16 years. After retiring from farming in 1981, Leon sold real estate for the next 29 years as Leon was someone who needed to remain busy.
Leon is survived by Cletha, his loving wife of 68 years, whom he met on a blind date; daughter, Donna; son, Victor and wife Susan; grandsons, Todd and wife DeNeal, and Kevin and wife Sandra; great-grandsons, Hunter and Gabriel; brother, Arlie and wife Shirley; sister-in-law, Judy; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
Leon was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Helen Fann, Emogene Utley; and brothers, Jerrold and Hoston Fann.
Leon was a 32nd degree Mason and member for 50 years, a life member of the Woodland Elks Lodge BPOE No. 1299, Yolo Fliers Club member for 45 years, Ben Ali Shriners, and American Legion Post 77. He will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.
A private burial service will be held. A reception is scheduled from noon to 3 p.m., Friday, March 4, at the American Legion, 523 Bush St., Woodland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one's choice. Kraft Bros. Funeral Directors of Woodland is assisting the family with arrangements.
