Manuel Castaneda Jr., died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014 at home in Woodland surrounded by family. He was 77.
Manuel was born April 25, 1936 in Fresno and moved to Woodland in 1943. He graduated from Woodland High School in 1954, served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1959 and in the National Guard Reserve.
Manuel was involved in agriculture most of his life. He worked for local ag chemical companies and started up Cache Creek Chemicals, Inc., in 1977, which he owned and operated until his retirement in 2004.
Manuel kept busy entertaining family and friends, gardening and was a passionate supporter of his children's and grandchildren's sports, even traveling out of state at every opportunity to spend time with them. He was also a member of Holy Rosary Church, the Pan American Club and a CAPCA member.
Manuel is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ofelia (Contreras) Castaneda; daughter Brenda (Castaneda) Brennan and Francis Brennan; sons Jack Castaneda (Leann Northam), Tim Castaneda (Mary Carter), Isaac Castaneda ( Deanne Haskell) and Eric Castaneda (Margarita Lua). He is also survived by grandchildren Manny, Sammi and Anthony Castaneda, Shane, Connor and Braden Brennan, Tristan and Matt Castaneda, Alec and Kyle Castaneda, Aliese, Eric Jr., and Michael Castaneda; and step-grandchildren Nic and Alex Cain; sisters Hope Ramirez (Albert Ramirez), Connie Leandro; and brother Raul Castaneda. Manuel was preceded in death by his parents, Manuel Castaneda Sr., and Angela (Carlos) Castaneda; brother Richard Castaneda; and infant sister Amparo Castaneda.
A vigil will begin at 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 27, at McNary's Chapel, 458 College St., Woodland. A funeral Mass is scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Friday, Feb. 28, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 301 Walnut St., with Father Colm O'Kelly officiating. Manuel's remains will be entombed in a mausoleum in St. Joseph's Cemetery after the Mass. Following entombment, a reception will be held at Waite Hall at the Yolo County Fairgrounds. Memorial contributions may be sent in his name to Yolo Hospice, Woodland Christian High School's Athletic Department or Christian Brothers High School Scholarship Fund.

This is to a man that I met 34 years ago. I had no idea what an impact he would have on my life. He was a quiet and soft spoken man. I have worked for him off and on through the years. He has given me work that was challenging and let me work through it. With his input, I learned a lot. I learned not to be derogotory towards people, instead be charming and things would have a better outcome. He would inspire me in a lot of ways. When I learned of his illness I told him he was like a Timex watch. Now that Manuel has passed on, his legacy will live on. He has raised a family with good morals. Good People with alot of class. My heart goes out to all of the Castanada family. I will miss him as much as they will. Rest in Peace Manuel.
