Thomas Dowling Obituary

Thomas S. Dowling Glenville Thomas S. Dowling passed away on Saturday, April 11, 2015. Born in Bronx, NY, he relocated his young family to upstate, where he established roots in Glenville 45 years ago, to raise four children with his wife, the late Mary (Jarcynski) Dowling. Their home on Cypress Drive provided a country setting for their children, numerous local children and their own eight grandchildren, who craved summer weeks spent in Glenville and brought them such joy. Countless hours would be spent swimming in their pool, exploring the creek and the woods behind the house and hiking the trails to Indian Meadows. The oldest of Thomas J. Dowling and Margaret Cummings, Tom graduated from St. John's Grammar School and Mount Saint Michael's Academy in the Bronx. He would go on to Manhattan College and receive his bachelor's, working in sales for 35 years. Tom most recently was a bus driver for Shenendehowa Central Schools for 15 years until his retirement. Tom loved his family and was affectionately known as Pops. His sense of humor and ability to light up a room will be missed. He could tell a joke, serve as a scout on family vacations, and always enjoyed a round of poker or Michigan Rummy. He was a voracious reader, creative writer, and a great storyteller. Pops dabbled in photography, bird watching, enjoyed his newspapers and sports pages, and could often be found working in his yard. Tom is survived by his daughter, Laura (Michael) Aldrich of Winchester, MA; sons, Timothy (Lisa) of Narrowsburg, NY, and Stephen of Schenectady; and eight beloved grandchildren, Aidan, Reed, Ella, Mallory, Liam and Finn Aldrich, and Kate and Meghan Dowling. His son, Thomas, died in 1988 from Muscular Dystrophy. Tom is also survived by his sisters, Nancy Keating and her husband, Henry of East Windsor, NJ, Mary Jane McCormick of Columbus, NJ; his brother Brian and his wife, Jackie of Wantagh, NY, his sisters-in-law, Georgiana Farley of East Hanover, NJ, June O'Brien of Cincinnati, OH, Mary Roeske of East Setauket, NY, along with many nieces and nephews and their families. Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday. April 16 at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Road, East Glenville. On Friday, April 17 funeral services begin at 8:15 a.m. at the funeral home and are followed at 9 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 400 Saratoga Road, Glenville. Private interment will be at St. Anthony's Cemetery, Glenville at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org or to www.boystown.org. The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself ... any mans death diminishes me". We are sorry for your loss.
