Paul Chacho Obituary

Paul A. Chacho CarlislePaul A. Chacho, 95, of Carlisle, died on December 23, 2013 of natural causes while spending the winter in Melbourne Beach, FL. Paul was born to the late Alexander Chacho and Ewhenia Mikulak on July 15, 1918 in Hillside, PA. At the age of 3, he left with his mother to grow up in Poland until returning to the United States as a young man. Paul held various jobs and business ventures. He ran a successful restaurant business in Hastings, NY, worked and retired from Conrail Railroad, and later began farming and water well drilling in Carlisle. He served in the United States Army during World War II as a light artillery gun crewman and was involved in various battles including ones in Normandy, Northern France, and Ardennes in Central Europe. During this time, he was wounded twice, earning the Purple Heart Medal. He also received several other accommodations including a Distinguished Unit Badge, a Good Conduct Medal, and the European, African, and Middle Eastern Service Medals. Paul was always willing to help his friends and neighbors. He remained youthful for his advanced age and stayed a sharp dresser for any occasion. He loved his garden, making wine, fishing, the company of others, and most of all, good polka. He is survived by his daughters, Nancy Chacho of Cobleskill, and Olga and Bod Tusco of Silver Springs, MD; his son, Paul Jr. and Coreen Chacho of Richmondville; and his grandsons, Alexander and Devon Chacho of Richmondville. His advice, wisdom, and storytelling, which entranced both the young and old, will be dearly missed. It was difficult for anyone who met him not to like him. If you knew him as Paul, Tot, Grandpa or Uncle Paul, you understand that enough could never be said to praise him. We love you and miss you; may you rest in peace. A committal service with full military honors will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 6, 2014 at Gerald B.H. Solomon National Cemetery in Schuylerville, NY. Memorial contributions may be made to the Leatherstocking Honor Flight, PO Box 621, Cobleskill, NY 12043. Local arrangements have been entrusted to Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, Cobleskill, and Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home, Middleburgh.
