Hazel A. Rumney

Hazel A. Rumney, 85, of Scotia, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at home with family by her side. She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, James H. Rumney, Jr. of Scotia; her children, Beth Harding and husband, Bruce of Ajax, Ontario, Barbara Topor of Ware, MA and James B. Rumney and wife, Kathleen of Glenville; grandchildren, Karley and Riley Harding, Hallie O'Connor and husband Sean and Cody and Greg Rumney; great- grandchildren, Ella and Easton O'Connor; sister, Miriam Sausville and husband, Richard; brother, Franklin Agnew and wife, Kris; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. Hazel was born in Elizabethtown, NY and was a graduate of Elizabethtown-Lewis Central School, class of 1949. She attended Plattsburgh State Teacher's College, graduating in 1953 and went on to enjoy a career of over 30 years teaching second grade in Scotia-Glenville. A talented organist, Hazel served as organist for the Alplaus Methodist Church for two years, the Scotia Baptist Church for one year as well as substituting for many of the area churches. She was a longtime member of the Scotia United Methodist Church where she was involved with the Worship Commission, the Staff Parish Commission and was a member of Apprentice Group. She volunteered her time as a Sunday school teacher and served as the Church Choir director for eight years. Hazel was also a member of Beukendaal George Hope Chapter 271 Order of the Eastern Star and served as a local Girl Scout Leader for many years. She earned the Parent Teacher Award from Sacandaga School and was presented with a life membership of the Scotia- Glenville PTA. Hazel was a member of the NYS Retired Teacher's Association, was a nursery school teacher at SUMC for two years and volunteered her time playing piano for the protestant prayer services held at the Baptist Health Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Scotia. Funeral services will be held Friday, April 7, 2017 at 1 p.m. at The White Funeral Home, 264 N. Ballston Ave., Scotia. The family will receive relatives and friends 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday prior to the services at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Park Cemetery, Scotia.
