JOSEPH WEEKS Obituary

Joseph I. Weeks Visitation for Joseph I. Weeks, 89, will be from 4 until 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 18, at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., Wheaton. A service of celebration of his life will be held at the Wheaton Bible Church, 27W500 North Ave., West Chicago, on Friday, Nov. 19, at 11:30 a.m. Interment is private in Wheaton Cemetery. Born Oct. 2, 1921, in Clinton, N.C., the eldest of three sons of J.I. Weeks D.V.S. and Margaret Ruth Welsh Weeks, he passed away Sunday, Nov. 14, 2010, at Windsor Park Manor in Carol Stream. As a teenager in Clinton, Joe earned his Class A amateur radio license, worked in a grocery store, and accompanied his father on veterinary calls. At age 16, he went to Wheaton Academy in Wheaton, to complete high school and then enrolled in Wheaton College, Class of 1942, majoring in chemistry. The day after graduation Joe went to work at the explosive manufacturing facility in Elwood, where he continued for two years. In 1943, he married Carol Burnett Anderson, whom he had met while working as a teaching assistant in a chemistry lab at Wheaton College the previous year. Joe was drafted into the Navy in 1944. His amateur radio experience enabled him to teach electronics at Navy Pier in Chicago for the remainder of World War II. After the war, he worked for Sherwin Williams Paint Company in Cleveland, Ohio for two years, and then he returned to Chicago to work for The William Wrigley Jr. Company. He built and operated a flavor factory in West Chicago. From 1957 to 1959, he managed the restoration of a chewing gum manufacturing facility in Wembley, England. Upon his return to the U.S. he worked at the Wrigley headquarters in Chicago and at Amurol Confections, a Wrigley subsidiary. In 1972, he went to work for ServiceMaster in Downers Grove, as a vice president and enjoyed a variety of interesting assignments over the next 15 years. Upon his retirement, Joe and Carol began wintering in Bradenton, Fla. Joe was an elder in the Wheaton Bible Church during the 1960s, and was instrumental in acquiring and developing the square block at its former downtown Wheaton location, now the north campus of St. John's Lutheran Church and School. Joe maintained close personal and professional ties to his hometown, Clinton, N.C. He visited family there at least annually most of his adult life, most recently to attend the wedding of Brittany Weeks and Jason McGuirt in June 2010. He also developed an industrial park to attract manufacturing jobs to Clinton. Joe and Carol were loyal alumni of Wheaton College. The Weeks Chemistry Lab, dedicated Oct. 1, 2010, commemorates their lifelong devotion to one another and to the college. Joe and Carol actively encouraged the education of their children, grandchildren and other young people whom they met. Joe was a model of integrity, responsibility and faith for his family. He had a keen mind and enjoyed sharing books and ideas with his grown children and mentoring the younger generations on their career paths. He is survived by his three children, Cheryl (John Rosten) Weeks-Rosten of Midland, Mich., Dr. James (Lois) Weeks of Venice, Fla. and Laurel (Douglas Cremer) Weeks of Sunnyvale, Calif.; eight grandchildren, Joe (Christina) Weeks, Mark Weeks, Nathan (Marlene) Weeks, Dr. Lane (Chris) DeWan, Brendan Ittelson, Sara Ittelson, Randy (Lesley) Rosten and Lisabeth (fiance, Donald Rembert) Rosten; five great-grandchildren, Viggo, Svea and Elin Weeks, and Ollie and Soren DeWan; his brother, Dr. Paul (Doris) Weeks; brother-in-law, Wilbur (Muriel) Anderson; and Ann Weeks, widow of his brother, John. He was also loved by many nieces and nephews. Joe was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Carol; his brother, John Weeks D.V.M.; sisters-in-law, Barbara Weeks and Ruth Anderson; and brothers-in-law, John Burton Anderson and Ralph Anderson. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Joseph I. and Carol Anderson Weeks Scholarship Fund at Wheaton College or to the Wheaton Bible Church. Family and friends may sign a guest book at www.hultgrenfh.com. For more information, please call the funeral home at 630-668-0027.

Joe will be sorely missed by his many friends and fellow alumni of Wheaton College. We served together on the Alumni Board and I early was impressed during his five-year term 196l-66 at the common-sense wisdom and leadership qualities he brought to our meetings. Joe became a cherished friend thru the years and Lillian and I are so glad we had the chance to greet and speak with him at Homecoming in October. We extend sincere condolences to the Weeks family. Our prayers and thoughts with all of the Weeks family. I had the opportunity to talk with Joe at length at the funeral for Ralph Anderson, his brother-in-law. He was a kind man and by our conversation it was evident the love he had for his family.

May sweet memories of Joe overflow as you grieve and celebrate his life. Blessings to you all!

There are no words to appropriately express the sadness I feel. The impact Mr. Weeks has had on my life is phenomenal and, most definitely, "life-changing". I came to know Mr. Weeks when he was the President of Amurol Products Company in 1968. He hired me directly out of business school, so he was my first "boss". I immediately learned of, (but did not immediately "embrace"), his "passion for perfection". Within a very short period of time, that same "passion" infiltrated my soul and remains with me today ... (much to the dismay of some colleagues!). Mr. Weeks was not only the BEST "boss" any graduate could hope for, he was, also, my mentor, cheerleader, family, and "forever" friend. He and Mrs. Weeks have been involved in every important milestone in my and my daughters' lives ... births, baptisms, graduations, weddings, and more births. I feel so incredibly blessed that God brought him into my life all those many years ago. He loved his family and friends unconditionally. He will remain forever in my heart. Please know my thoughts, love and prayers are with the entire Weeks' family during this difficult and sad time in your lives. May peace, love and healing be with you all.
With love and in friendship ...

My deepest sympathies for his family. I work in the dining room at Windsor Park Manor and Joe was always one to go out of his way and say hello to me. He always asked about my schooling and wished me well in my endeavors. He was such a kind soul and he will be missed very much.

We were so sorry to hear of Joe's passing. We met Joe and Carol as neighbors in Wheaton in the 1980's. We also attend Wheaton Bible Church, where we saw them often. They were a special gentile couple and we will miss them both.

My prayers and sympathy go out to the Weeks family. Mr. Weeks was my boss at ServiceMaster 1978-1980 and was integral to the start of my career in fleet. I'm forever thankful God put him in my life in those early years. God Bless.

My deepest sympathy to all the family. My husband, Elmer Neuhoff worked with Joe Weeks at Northwestern Chemical Company in West Chicago, IL around 1950, as a chemist. I also worked with Joe as a secretary. Joe was a very kind man and will be missed by all who knew him. My husband, Elmer died in Sept. 2006 and I remember Joe coming to the visitation. I wish I could come to pay my respect but I take care of my grand children (8 & 5) who lost their mother (my daughter, Kristine) fifteen months ago.

Dear Mr. Weeks,

May you forever rest in peace.

November 15, 2010

Cheryl, I'm so sorry to hear about your father. Even when we know that we'll meet our parents again in heaven, it's doesn't make it much easier to deal with the empty space they leave in our heart and lives here on earth. May you find comfort in the love of God that transcends everything else and in the love of your family that surrounds you now.
I shall be praying for you and your family. Sharon Rosenwald
