LEROY PFUND Obituary

LeRoy H. Pfund, age 96, a resident of Windsor Park in Carol Stream, died Thursday, June 2. He was born October 10, 1919 in Oak Park, IL to Liebhart and Helen Pfund. His grandparents emigrated from Switzerland and started a floral business in Oak Park. He was raised in Elmhurst and graduated from York High School in 1937 where he was an honor student and participated in football, basketball and track. He attended the University of Illinois. He spent eight seasons in professional baseball and made his Major League debut as a pitcher with the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 21, 1945. In his time in the Dodgers' organization his teammates included Hall of Famers Jackie Robinson and Pee Wee Reese. He appeared in 15 games for the Dodgers in 1945, however his major league career was cut short due to a knee injury. He completed his college education at Wheaton College. In 1941 he married Mabel "Mibs" Tillman. They raised their family in Wheaton and were long time members of College Church in Wheaton. In 1949 he started as a coach and instructor of Physical Education at Wheaton College. Coach Pfund led Wheaton's baseball program from 1948-59 and 1961-74. His 1951 team is the only Wheaton baseball team in school history to win a CCI or CCIW championship. He served as head men's basketball coach from 1951-75, guiding Wheaton to the first-ever NCAA Small College Division Men's Basketball Championship in 1957 as his squad garnered a 28-1 record. Overall, he led the Crusaders to five College Conference of Illinois (CCI) championships; and from 1955-59 his teams won a conference record 58 consecutive CCI contests.

Very sorry to hear of the passing of Leroy Pfund. I had the pleasure of meeting Leroy in Decatur, Il. The same Decatur where he played with the Decatur Commodores. I have posted a picture of Leroy in my office, to show how proud I am to have met and shook hands with Mr. Leroy Pfund.

My heart felt condolences to each of you in Lee's family. Lee's life and kindly words got me motivated to be an authentic Christian student athlete at Wheaton and served me well as a great model for my life. May the Lord grant you His peace.

While Lee was my mom's cousin, I thought of him like an uncle. Lee was a man of integrity, strength, compassion and great faith in his Lord. I have such fond memories of him since I met him in my early twenties, and his life has had a great impact on me.
My prayers and thoughts are with the family. Lee will be greatly missed this side of heaven!

My sympathies are with the family for a man who had a wonderful life. I along with many Wheaton graduates were greatly touched by this man. As a four year baseball player under Gary Taylor, Coach Pfund was always there to give me encouragement and a little instruction. What a nice man he was. Now with our Lord!

We are with you in Spirit as you all say this difficult earthly good-bye.

As we have read recently of Lee, it is obvious to many and us personally that Lee lived a life worth emulating because of his love for his Savior. His influence upon our lives made us both better people.

Our love to you all and the Lord Willing we will see you in July.

Love and hugs

Coach Pfund to many, he was Uncle Lee to me. Always remember my visits with him during my childhood but more recently trips to Cheesecake Factory in SoFla. Rest in Peace.

The Lord has called His faithful servant, and our wonderful teacher, leader and friend, Coach Pfund, to his heavenly home. Our prayers go to his family at this time. We want them to know that both Coach and Mibs had a very positive influence on our lives. We thank God for them.

Coach Pfund was like a second father. I not only enjoyed our conversations on our southern baseball trips but since Kerry and I ran around together for a few years after my graduation, I was included in some additional time. Coach's testimony of never playing on Sunday was an inspiration. And then to hear how he befriended Jackie Robinson when others on the Dodgers shunned him revealed a man who at a very young age was principled in the faith and showed everyone the love of Christ. I guess what I am trying to say is that Coach walked the talk. he will be greatly missed. Our hearts go out to the family. We pray you will continue the legacy of your father.
