RICHARD GRAYSON Obituary

Dr. Richard Roland Grayson, M.D. of Batavia Dr. Richard Roland Grayson, M.D., 85, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2010, at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield. He was born in Chicago, Oct. 21, 1925, the son of Roland Howard Grayson and Sylvia Jeanette Mandelbaum. He served in the Naval Reserves as a student at Wabash College and at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, and in the Air Force Reserves as a medical officer at the rank of captain for the U.S. Air Force Training Command. He practiced medicine, specializing in internal medicine, with certification in electrocardiography, from 1948 until two weeks before his death. Although he had a private medical practice, he was also active in research, publishing 15 articles in medical journals during the 1950s, including an often cited study on the thyroid gland that was buried in a time capsule at the New York World's Fair and an article describing a new disease that he discovered, "Silo Filler's Disease;" he continued to publish thereafter. He moved his family to St. Charles in 1963, joined the staff at Delnor Hospital, and set up his private practice on Main Street, just steps from the Fox River, with a laboratory and multiple examination rooms. He was a brilliant diagnostician who often solved medical cases in an instant that had stumped other doctors, and he invented a way to save the life of his own premature baby daughter. Inspired by his interest in the relationship between stress and stomach ulcers, in 1971 he founded the American Academy of Stress Disorders. In 1975 People Magazine ran a feature story on him for allowing patients to reduce his charges to them at will, as described in an article of his in "Medical Economics." From 1960 to 2010 he was a Senior Federal Aviation Medical Examiner for the FAA, and he has certified thousands of pilots as fit to fly. He was chair of the Department of Medicine at Delnor 1987-1989 and chair of the Bioethics Committee 1991-1995. He was an amateur radio operator and a genealogist with three ancestors on the Mayflower, and a member of the societies for the Mayflower Descendants, the Sons of the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War. He was a forceful person with a lot of drive and an avid reader who enjoyed wide-ranging discussions about religion, philosophy, science, current events, and politics with his relatives, friends, pilots, and patients. He was preceded in death in 1991 by his first wife, June Lind Grayson. Survivors include his wife, Bobbie Gerbrecht Grayson; his children with June, Daniel Richard Grayson (Carol Livingstone), Kristin Emilie Grayson, Rebecca Grayson (Gregory) Jaxon and Janelle Grayson (Randy) Ream; his stepchildren with Bobbie, Julie Gerbrecht (Elliott) Baumgartner and Arno Robert Gerbrecht (Jenn Vogel); his sisters, Patricia Jebavy and Priscilla Rutter; 13 grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren, and one great-grandchild. His web site is http://doctorgrayson.com/. Visitation will be 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, at Malone Funeral Home, 324 E. State St. (Route 38), Geneva. He will lie in state at St. Mark's Lutheran Church 101 S. Sixth Ave., St. Charles, 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. Friday; the service begins at 10:30 a.m. followed by burial in Garfield Cemetery in Campton Township. Memorial donations to a charity of the donor's choice are welcome. For information, 630-232-8233 or visit malonefh.com.

Dear Birgit Orgeldinger,

We have a "Jennie Mandelbaum" in the family tree. She's the daughter of Baruch Mandelbaum and Theresa Schild. She married Maurice Finkelstein and had two children with him.

He was my father. I owe him everything for getting me started on my career as a mathematics professor and a mathematician. He taught me to add and subtract with spoons on the living room floor when I was 3. He got me into third grade math when I was in first grade. He was always asking what we kids wanted to be when we grew up. I saw a high school algebra show on WTTW, the educational station in Chicago, at the age of 11, and told him I was going to be a mathematician. I stuck with it.

Our friendship started back in 1970 on my return home from Vietnam. It was a strong and lasting friendship that I still hold in my heart today . We shared many laughs together through the years. It was my pleasure to interview Dr Grayson and put his life's story on cd for him and his family to enjoy for many years to come. I'm sure when his family members listen to that interview today, it's going to bring back memories just like it was yesterday. A special note to the Dick Graysons family, you were blessed, and I wish all the best,
Denny Farrell

I was a nurse for June and Dr. Grayson in 1984-86. They were very caring people, often very worried about their patients. June asked me to bake birthday cakes for their patients on their birthdays. Dr would sit by his computer & phone in the evenings in case patients needed him. He was an excellent diagnostician, finding & confirming an AIDS patient in early '80s. The world will miss them both.

I have known Dr. Grayson since 2000 as he was my FAA medical examiner. I always enjoyed the time that I spent talking to him, whatever the subject. He was a very brilliant man and he will be missed very much.

Perryville, Missouri is a small town - population of 5000+ - way too small for the brilliance of Dr. Grayson. As a junior high student, I headed with my parents to our small town ER in the middle of the night. having severe pain and suspecting appendicitis. Never have I heard the word before or after, but "middleschmerz" (sp?) is a painful gaseous condition caused by ovulation - which became my life for several years. I didn't have to go to doctor after doctor, have test after test, but there in the middle of one night, in one brilliant mind was my diagnosis. Obviously, according to his obituary, he was the genius we thought he was then.

Jsn Lind Case, Dr. Grayson's niece, lived with Dick and June during our jr. high years and has become a lifelong friend, even giving me the honor of being her daughter Kristi's godmother. I know Jan's deep love for Dr. Grayson and his family.

May the same God who welcomed Dick home keep each of you who loved him in His tender care.

The Lord's tapestry of life is woven with the threads of many lives. I never had the opportunity to meet Dr. Grayson except through his loving and brilliant daughter, Kristin. I am grateful to Dr. Grayson for instilling in her his love for learning and love for mankind. I am grateful to the Lord that Dr. Grayson was able to know that she is now Dr. Kristin Grayson. I know he is very proud of her for her hard work and personal ministries with less fortunate children. Her life is a testimony of the life that he modeled for his family. May God bless and keep the family of Dr. Richard Grayson during this time of healing and reflection.

My sympathy to Dr. Grayson's family and friends. Dr. Grayson was a very intelligent and active person. In 1953, while he and June lived in Perryville, MO, he removed my appendix. Otherwise, I would not be here. I was 15 at the time. My appendix was ready to break. My parents took me to his house at night, where he examined me and said he would meet us at the hospital. He pressed on my abdomen and released quickly. I went through the ceiling in pain. He knew it was my appendix and removed it that night.
Janice and Karen Lind (sisters-in-law) lived there for a couple years with Dr. and June Grayson. I even dated Janice. I remember he had a weight set in the basement. There are probably many more things I do not remember. I do remember he was a kind, gentle, sensitive man. Clyde Schremp (Rockwall, TX)

My grandfather, Dexter Norton Sr., was an opinionated man. He was a patient of Dr. Richard Grayson and, of all the people that he came into contact with, totally respected Dr. Grayson's word and listened to what he had to say. Dr. Grayson was a wonderful doctor and a person who you could confide in. He was a great friend to all who knew him.

Then the righteous will answer Him, Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you. When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you? The King will reply, I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for Me.
Matthew 25:37-40.

Dick told me several years ago that he tried to live by these words. I was one of the many he took in. I'm glad I got the chance to tell him "thank you" one final time.
