Lawrence Ave., Norridge, proceeding to St. Thecla Catholic Church, 6725 W. Larry was a vice president of the Joyce Foundation and program officer for its Money and Politics Program. He was also a board member of the University YMCA at the University of Illinois and of the Donors Forum, and chair of the Advisory Board of Illinois Issues. Larry was a beloved figure in American politics and an inspiration to all who worked with him. He had vast experience in government and politics and a rich appreciation for history - all of which he generously shared with his signature wit and good humor. His strength of spirit was matched equally with compassion and kindness. His family and friends were tremendously enriched by Larry's presence in their lives and their memories will forever be cherished. He was the loving husband of 41 years to Margaret "Marge" (nee Rybicki); beloved son of Jeanne and the late Stanley D. Hansen; much loved son-in-law of the late Marge and John Rybicki; cherished brother of Janis (David) Duewel, Lance (Sue) and Candace; treasured brother-in-law of Patricia and John Brown; and fond uncle and great-uncle of many nieces and nephews. Memorials may be sent to University YMCA at the University of Illinois, 1001 S. Larry was a special friend. Our paths would have crossed a lot more had we not moved to Indiana when Marge and he returned to Chicago. He passed before my spouse and I moved back over five years ago. His vision of a better political system lives on in spite of the setbacks it has received since the 2016 election. We need to continue to hold on to and pursue that vision.

I always will be grateful to Larry. I met him first in the 1970 Stevenson-for-Senate campaign. At a time when many of my fellow college students were deeply discouraged, Larry showed me how to fight the good fight through the political system. When I was an intern on Capitol Hill, he looked out for me. Years later, we reconnected with both of us in the nonprofit sector. Larry was doing great work at the Joyce Foundation, and I was a new arrival as President at the Chicago History Museum. Larry was a terrific counselor and friend -- and a lover of history to boot. Chicago has lost one of its stars.
