DELORES COOMES Obituary

Delores Elaine Coomes Delores Elaine Coomes (Adams), passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her children on Monday, March, 14, at 5 a.m. Born and raised in Chicago, Delores attended Wright Junior College and then was employed by the Mandel Brothers Company. She met and married Bryan John Coomes of Louisville, Ky. in 1950. Their first two children, Nancy and Judy, were born in the city, and then the young family moved to Lombard, Ill., where Bryan and Delores had purchased their first home. Over the next 10 years the family grew with the births of sons, Bryan, Christopher, John, Charles and Martin. All the children graduated from Glenbard East High School and Chris and Marty are Lombard firefighters. Delores was a busy homemaker who created a warm home for her large family. She enjoyed gardening and sewing and especially loved to cook and bake. She taught all her children the pleasure and importance of good and healthy food; hers was a "made-from-scratch" kitchen. All seven of her children carry this gift forward as they share her love of cooking and family meal times. She loved good music, and was an avid dancer well into her sixties. Her children would hear her playing Chopin on the piano late at night and she wouldn't hesitate to strap on her tap dance shoes for the family holiday talent shows or for her TOPS group fundraisers. The "Tapping Delores" act consistently brought the house down as the dancing was good and her joy was contagious. Reading and travel were additional interests for Delores, but her greatest enthusiasm was reserved for her beloved Chicago Cubs. Delores was an unwavering fan until her very last days. She and Bryan were members of Abiding Peace Lutheran Church and Delores was a member of the King's Daughters. Delores was happiest when sharing her love with her extended family and friends and she will be missed tremendously by all who knew and loved her. Survivors include her children, Nancy (Rick) Kasper of St. Charles, Ill., Judy (Rob) Wachler of Pleasant Ridge, Mich., Bryan (Sandy) Coomes of Milwaukee, Wis., Christopher (Sandy) Coomes of Sandwich, Ill., John (Maki) Coomes of Chicago, Charlie (Laura) Coomes of Summerfield, Fla. and Martin (Deanna) Coomes of St. Charles; grandchildren, Jason and Jonathan Kasper, Sarah and Amy Wachler, Nina and Mary Coomes, Stephen and Riley Coomes and Zachary Coomes; and great-grandchildren, Kyleigh and Khloe Kasper, and Jack and Samantha Philip. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wayne and Irene (Caron) Adams; her husband, Bryan Coomes in 2010; and a sister, Charlotte Schulz. Visitation services will be held Friday, March 18, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Laird Funeral Home in Elgin, followed by a funeral service on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Abiding Peace Lutheran Church in Elgin, with visitation from 9:30 a.m. until the service. Memorial gifts may be given Provena Life Connections at 708-478-7933, Abiding Peace Lutheran Church, 9N976 Randall Road Elgin, IL 60123 or the American Diabetes Association.
