Richard M. Scholten, devoted and loving husband to the late Joyce (Hansen) Scholten for 61 years and cherished father of Stephen (Peggy), Scott (Barbara) and Susan (Tim) Fahy died peacefully on February 5, 2018. Proud and cherished Papa to Katie (Tim) Monahan, Carly Scholten, Kimberly (Doug) Storrie, Rachael Scholten, Scott (Bari) Scholten, Bradley (Sherri) Scholten, Holly (Jake) Temme, Kelly Killpack and Chase Fahy. Loving Big Papa to Mac Monahan, Arthur Storrie, Declan Monahan, Calvin Storrie, Jaxton Scholten and Grace Scholten. Richard was born in Maple Hill, Iowa, to Joseph and Elizabeth Scholten on December 12, 1926. He was the brother of the late Joseph and Vionna and is survived by Dorothy and LaVonne. A proud Navy man, Richard served with the Seabees in the South Pacific during World War II. Richard graduated from Monmouth College after the war, where he met Joyce while assisting the freshman class with move in. Theirs was a story-book love story and they were inseparable for 61 loving years. Richard and Joyce moved to Elk Grove Village in 1957 as one of the first 100 families. They raised their family there and lived in Elk Grove for the remainder of their lives raising, their 3 children and watching their grandchildren grow. Being a part of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren's lives was his highest priority. Each of them, each of us, grew up knowing we were special. He was loved by the community and leaves a lasting memory for all whose lives he touched. Papa and Dede were regulars at Soccer, Volleyball, Basketball, Baseball, Musicals, Choir and Dance Recitals. He was so proud of each accomplishment, and was the honorary Grandpa for many of the teams and friends. Papa instilled in each family member a deep love for each other, and a passion for family traditions, for all things Disney, and the Cubbies. His legacy lives on with his family and the joy they find in coming together to celebrate family traditions and with each wonderful trip to Richard's beloved Old Key West resort at the Disney Vacation Club. And so, Richard and Joyce's love story starts a new chapter in heaven, together again. We will always ... Love You More Papa. Visitation Saturday 1:30 p.m. until time of Service, 5:30 p.m. at The Oaks Funeral Home, 1201 E. Irving Park Road (at Prospect), Itasca. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Grenadier Athletic Boosters (Elk Grove High School). For funeral info, 630-250-8588 or www.theoaksfh.com.

What a wonderful, delightful, giving man! I was so fortunate to meet Dick through Katie, his beautiful granddaughter and wife to my son Tim. One of the benefits of extended families is getting to know and meet people like Dick. He added a spark of love and laughter to every celebration he attended - be it a wedding, a family birthday, or a sporting event. He will be missed.

Dick Scholten was not only my boss at HALO, but also my mentor, bridge partner and friend. Professionally...Top Notch. Personally...A wonderful loving guy.

I knew without question, that once Dede and Papa looked at me as a Scholten, it was set...I was a lifer. I will forever remember egg salad in a Cool Whip containers, trail mix (with I think extra M&M's just for me) and that they hung onto Frank's (my grandpa) birdhouse from my wedding. While I remember the Lonsdale house, I have memories of always running over to see Papa and Dede whenever we were in town. When I brought Craig to meet them, it was like we just fit, like we were just another few members of the family. Some are right, they are probably dancing among the stars together, but I will only ever hear Papa talking about how lucky he is to have snagged the most beautiful woman around, and Dede laughing. They were without question the definition of forever after. Love to you all.
