I have now just learned of Amy Beeman's death. I met Amy when were both studying in different programs at Temple's campus in Rome nearly thirty years ago. Amy was an intelligent and kind person who was always a pleasure to sit and talk with. She was funny and would tease me about things I hadn't noticed about myself. I remember us chatting in the kitchen, spotting each other at the markets, and conversing at Amy's studio area. If there ever was someone who was perfect to appreciate the intricate beauty of an ancient city and relish its culture, as an involved foreigner rather than a tourist, it was Amy Beeman.
During that winter, Amy asked me to sit for a portrait. She painted a quick sketch, then a careful portrait which was part of her exhibit when all the MFA students presented work before graduating. Then, when everyone was packing to leave, we made a little trade. I had the of horns of a ram, still joined together, that I'd bought from a butcher at Delphi, Greece. Amy had her two excellent pictures of my face. She devised what I thought was a hilarious plan to get the horns through US Customs, which was to bury them in a very large shopping bag with scarves and floppy hats and pretend to be vapid, claiming every tacky little souvenir so the inspector would roll his eyes and wave her through. The ruse worked. I stopped to visit Amy a few times in the years following that year in Italy, then we lost touch.
Let it be remembered that Amy Beeman enriched the lives of those around her just by being herself and sharing her thoughts. I'm glad Amy was my friend, but I wish I'd known her better. May the gods feed her honey!

Mike,
Bonnie told me about Amy. Nancy and I are very sorry to hear of her passing. I was thinking of her just last Friday and yesterday. 42 years ago she treated me very kindly in spite of my 'little brother' status. She was sweetie. I will remember you all at prayer time.
