Dr. Walter L. Kester

Dr. Walter L. Kester of West Chester Dr. Walter L. Kester, 85, of West Chester, died Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at his home. He was the husband of Ella Z. Kester. Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Donald Y. and Louise Otto Kester. He was a graduate of West Chester High School, class of 1943, Valedictorian. He served in the U.S. Navy as a medical doctor with the Marines during the Korean Conflict. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, Phi Beta Kappa, the University of PA Medical School and University of PA internship. He was in family practice in West Chester for many years. He was on the Chester County Hospital Staff and was vice chief of medical services. He was a member of the West Chester Board of Health and the Chester County Medical Society. He was a 50-year member of the First Presbyterian Church of West Chester. In retirement he enjoyed making fine furniture, volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, playing bridge and golfing at the West Chester Golf & Country Club, and spending time with his family. In addition to his wife, Dr. Kester is survived by his four children: Deborah Kester-Kenny (Douglas) of Gaithersburg, Md., Barbara Saadeh (William) of Lancaster, Betsy King (Mark) of Malvern, and Robert (Laurie) Kester of Oswego, N.Y.; eight grandchildren: Rebecca & Richard & David & William, Tiffany & Mark & Jodi, and Heather; four great-grandchildren, Jack, William, Emma and Wesley; and a brother, Donald J. Kester, of West Chester. He was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy L. Kester. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 27, at the First Presbyterian Church, 130 W. Miner Street, West Chester, PA 19382, where there will be a visitation from 1:30 p.m. until the time of service. Interment will be private in Birmingham-Lafayette Cemetery.
