Mary DEUELL Obituary

POQUOSON - On Friday, Oct. 29, 2010, Mary Hylton Deuell, 47, gathered her wings and went to be with her beloved Lord Jesus. She passed away in the company of her loving family, friends, and co-workers at the Sentara Careplex Hospital, Hampton.
Mary was a native of Newport News and a 1981 graduate of Menchville High School. She graduated from Old Dominion University in 1986 with a B. S. degree in Business. She was employed at NASA for 25 years and touched the lives of her co-workers with her infectious laugh and wit. Mary was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Yorktown, where she was a servant who shared her faith through incredible love and kindness for others.
Mary deeply loved her family and willingly sacrificed for them at all times. Even in her cancer, she fought to be with them as long as possible. She never gave up. She kept her family and friends strong even in her darkest times.
Mary was preceded in death by her mother-in-law, Ruth Deuell; maternal grandfather, Raymond Young; and paternal grandfather, Dalton H. Hylton.
She is survived by her loving husband of 20 years, Roy "Sonny" Deuell Jr.; their two children, Zack and Emily; her parents, Dalton and Brenda Hylton of Newport News; brother, Christopher Hylton of Newport News; father-in-law, Roy Deuell Sr.; paternal grandmother, Bonnie Hylton of Floyd; maternal stepgrandmother, Marie Young of Norfolk; brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Beverly Holmes of Williamsburg; nephew, Josh Holmes; nieces, Casey and Jessica Holmes of Williamsburg and Charleigh Hylton of Newport News; and many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 1, 2010, at Bethel Baptist Church Old Sanctuary, Yorktown. A Celebration of Mary's Life will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, at Bethel Baptist Church Worship Center by the Rev. Jeff Mingee. Followed by burial at Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News.

My prayers are with each of you in this time of great sadness. Mary was a light in a dark world. Her smile not only lit up her own face but the lives and faces of those who had the great fortune to share some time with her. Reading the messages here it is clear to me that she never changed from the beautiful happy little Child of God who would visit our church in Floyd whenever she was at her grandparents. I know that Mary's family will miss her greatly but I hope that her spirit and zest for life will forever be a part of each of them until they are reunited with her in our heavenly home. She was an angel among us and a role model for us all!

Brenda, Harrison & family -
My heartfelt sympathy in the passing of your precious Mary. I can still see that beautiful, sweet child sitting in the church pew with Mrs Bonnie and Mr Dalton. Of course, my Daddy (Leeson Peters) would have to pick at her a bit. Keeping your family in our thoughts and prayers.

Sonny, Zach and Emily,
I just wanted to let you know that you are in my prayers today. I haven't seen you guys for many years, since you left NRBC and we moved to Alabama. I will always remember our Sunday school times together in Dot's class and the time I watched Emily for the day. Emily and Mary Cate played dress-up all day long. I just went back and looked at the photos I took of the girls dressed as Cinderella and other various princesses. I know that everyone who lives you've been in are more blessed for knowing you all. Mary was a beautiful and wonderful person and I'm better for having known her.

Sonny,
Minette and I can not describe how badly we feel. Mary was a jewel - seeing you two 'newlyweds' together was the highpoint of our church events at Parkview. Minette and I will miss Mary - our lives were better just knowing she was sharing our world and her loss leaves an unfillable void in it.

Sonny, Zach, and Emily,

I only got the opportunity to meet you recently, but it only took a minute to see what a sweet family you are.

I worked with Mary for a couple years in Procurement, but thought of her more as a special friend. She was very special to me and I am honored to have known her.

I really appreciate your unselfishness Sonny in letting all her friends be there on the day she passed. I will never forget the feelings I had that day.

May God be with your family and know that He is there holding your hand to walk you through the rough times.

Take Care.

Mr. and Mrs. Hylton,

I only had the opportunity to meet you at the hospital the day your beloved daughter passed but it didn't take long to feel the love in the room. You two should be very proud of the woman Mary became. As you could see from the hopital room and halls being filled on that Friday, Mary had touched many lives. May God be with you during this time.

A Poem dedicated to the Family

"I Can Imagine"

I can imagine her body often wrecked with pain,
I can imagine the will it took just to sustain.
I can imagine her late at night softly praying,
And GOD hearing every word that she was saying.
I can imagine that her spirit sometimes got low,
It had to be difficult realizing that it was almost time to go.
I can imagine she had moments of doubt,
folowed by moments that she wanted to shout.
I can imagine her talking with GOD about his promise to never leave her alone,
I can imagine her mentally preparing to meet GOD at her at the heavenly throne.
I can imagine GOD looking down and saying, "Well done, my good and faithful servant, it's time to come home."
In a plit second like a vapor she was gone.
I can imagine that she flew away like being on an airplane, she took a first class flight,
GOD lifted her from this earthly site.
I can imagine the smile on her face when she realized that she had completed the race.
I can imagine her surrounded by angels at the pearly gate,
I can imagine St. Peter saying "Come on in - there is no need to wait."
I can imagine the joy she felt inside,
When Jesus greeted her with heavenly pride.
Close your eyes and imagine her nestled in the arms of GOD-
She is smiling down on us - Someday we'll see her agin if in GOD we trust!

Just know that you are in a lot of people's prayers and that most of all God is there for you to lean on. Mary was a bright light in a dark world. She will be remembered by her bright smile and hardy laugh. I sing a song that says -- " The hand of the Lord has the strength to move mountains, forge rivers and valleys and make oceans run dry -- but that very same hand holds the sparrow that's fallen -- what a blessing to know whereever I go his hands holding mine." Know that Mary is holding his hand. God bless and comfort you. Cherish the memories you shared with Mary and know you'll see her again.

Brenda, Harrison, Chris and Sonny,

I offer my love and support during this time and the months ahead as you remember how special Mary was. I treasure the opportunity I had to watch Mary grow from a preschooler into a lovely woman. The time we had together was so wonderful, and I remember it as a gift in my life.

While Mary will always live in our hearts, she also lives through her children. As you provide them with the help they will need to understand the loss of a mother, please share with them how Mary touched so many people - even when she was five years old.

May God's loving arms hold you steady during this difficult time.

Sonny, Zach, and Emily,

I worked with Mary on several different NASA agency projects and treasured her friendship. Her infectious smile and bubbly personality were her trademarks. Another of her trademarks was the great love she had for her family - I can just see her eyes light up as she talked about Zack and Emily.

You may have heard this story, but I must retell it here. On one of our many TDY trips supporting one of those NASA's projects, we were staying in DC. Mary was pregnant with Emily. When Mary's turn came to check in - Mary told the hotel clerk her name, and then the clerk (who had a broken accent) said "Mary, as in Mary Mother of God". We laughed then and from that moment forward Mary was always known to me as "Mary, as in Mary Mother of God". I will always remember Mary.

God bless you and comfort you in your loss.

***
To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

To the Deuell and Hylton families,

Mary was one of my very first, if not the first friend I ever had. She was a shining beacon of positivity and made a difference in so many of our lives.

Though we lost touch over the years I was constantly updated on Mary's family and life by my parents who also love Mary very much. I have so many happy memories of the times our families would get together and the fun we would have playing board games and just being kids. Even in high school Mary was still a loyal, loving friend.

I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to have known such an incredible, uplifting, and beautiful person. The empty place now left in all of our hearts will gradually fill with the memories of the joy that this special lady brought to the world.
