Arthur Seder Obituary

WILLIAMSBURG - Arthur R. Seder was born in 1920 and spent his school years in St. Paul, Minnesota. He entered Northwestern University in 1939, where he met his wife-to-be, Marion Francis Heltzel. In the fall of 1941, Mr. Seder left college to join the Army Corps, graduating from Aerial Navigation training in February, 1942 as a second lieutenant. He and Marion were married shortly thereafter. Mr. Seder was assigned to teach aerial navigation to Air Corp cadets and, by 1943, had been promoted to Captain. However, he was intent on becoming a pilot and was accepted for pilot training at that time. He received his pilot's wings in early 1944 and, after completing air crew training, flew to England, where he was assigned to the 401st Bombardment Group. There, he flew 26 missions as a lead B-17 bomber pilot and was assigned Assistant Group Operations Officer and promoted to the rank of Major. Shortly after his separation from the service in September 1945, Mr. Seder entered Northwestern University Law School in Chicago, Illinois. There he became co-editor of the Northwestern Law Review with John Paul Stevens, later a Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Mr. Seder graduated from Law School in 1947 summa cum laude and Order of the Coif. In 1948, Mr. Seder was chosen to be a Law Clerk to Chief Justice Fred M. Vinson of the United States Supreme Court, acting in that capacity until 1950. He then returned to Chicago and joined the law firm now known as Sidley & Austin, where he became a partner in 1955. In 1960, while remaining a member of the firm, he became General Counsel of American Natural Gas Company, later renamed American Natural Resources Company, with headquarters in Detroit, Michigan. In 1973, Mr. Seder was elected President of American Natural, and in 1976 became Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. He held that position until his retirement in 1985, during which time he also served as Chairman of the national association of the interstate gas pipelines and was primarily responsible for construction of the nation's first synthetic coal gasification plant. While living in Detroit, Mr. Seder held a number of civic positions, including Chairman of the Detroit Economic Club, Chairman of the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation and Chairman of the Board of Saint John Hospital. Upon his retirement, the Detroit City Council awarded him a key to the City in recognition of his civic services. Following his retirement in 1985, Mr. and Mrs. Seder moved to northern Virginia, where they operated a cattle farm while he also resumed the practice of law in Washington, D.C. In 1998, Mr. and Mrs. Seder moved to Williamsburg, Virginia. There, Mr. Seder has served on the Friends of the Library Board at the College of William and Mary and also taught a course on the Supreme Court and the Constitution at sessions of The Christopher Wren Association at William and Mary. Mr. Seder is also a Life Trustee of Northwestern University and served for many years as President of the 401st Bombardment Group Association. Mr. Seder is survived by his wife of 73 years; daughters, Susan LaHoda and Elizabeth Whistler and her spouse, Joseph P. Whistler; daughter-in-law, Julia Seder, wife of his deceased son, James Seder; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. Online condolences may be offered at www.nelsencares.com.

To the family of Art Seder, I offer my sincere condolences. I was not aware of his demise until today as I was trying to reach him. I am seeking a copy of his book on the Grantham family (the American branch) to link to my book on the English Granthams from the Middle Ages. Please feel free to contact me and, again, I am so sorry for your loss.
Sincerely,
Jacquie King

I am sorry to hear about Mr. Seder's passing.
On his family research, some years ago, he contacted me and we found out that we are distantly related.
He sent me his book about the seder family in the US, which was very interesting for me.

I am sorry to hear of Art's passing. Although growing up far from him, I had the honor of getting to know him after college, while working on the east coast and attending graduate school in New York. He and Marion were always gracious to us and we enjoyed our many visits to their Virginia ranch. My best wishes to all his immediate family - Phil Seder (Nephew)

I had the pleasure, the honor to work with Mr. Arthur Seder for four years in a public relations capacity at ANR. I had frequent face to face meetings with him throughout that time and traveled with him to North Dakota and several times to New York City. When he obtained a multi-billion dollar loan guaranty from President Jimmy Carter to finance America's first coal gasification plant, I received a call from a Wall Street Journal reporter saying that Arthur looked very presidential beside the president. Indeed, Arthur carried the conversation and could indeed have handled the Presidential position, if that's where his life had led him. He worked very hard for years on that project and most times it was a terrible uphill battle and he clearly bore the hurt. No one needs to say how lucid he was, how virtually regal he was, and how kind and compassionate an individual he was.

Although it may seem hard right now, it will be memories of the little things that help to soften a little the pain and bring the smiles back.

I had the pleasure and honor to work at ANR under Mr. Seder's leadership and to travel with him in Europe performing Investor meetings. He was very classy person who took the time to mentor a young professional. He will be missed. My sincere condolence to Art's family.

My sincere condolences to the Seder family on the passing of Art. My father Ray Lynch and Art were colleagues for many years at the American Natural Resources Company in Detroit. One memory of Art and Marion Seder that I still remember is the elegance in which they could light up a dance floor as they did at my siblings' weddings. To this day, I say that I want to learn to dance like Art and Marion Seder!

Despite not seeing my Dad for nearly 30 years, Art sent a very touching note to my Mom in 2012 when my Dad passed away. This was a very thoughtful gesture.

Art and his family are in my prayers.

So sorry to hear of Art's passing. I had the pleasure of working with him on Men's Charity Tennis. He was a magician with words. He listened to what I wanted to say and returned articles that were beyond what I could have written. He made my life easier and I have told others what a pleasure it was to work with him. I consider myself fortunate and proud to have known him.
Only now do I realize all his accomplishments. He was humble and made me feel special. I will never forget him.

I remember Mr. Seder, Jr. as the president of ANR Pipeline Co. He was respected as a great leader of that company. .RIP

It was such an honor to be associated with Art through the 401st Bombardment Group Association. He was truly an encouragement when I became a part of the association leadership. My Uncle Frank and I always enjoyed our time with Art at reunions, all the way to England! He and Marion were a lovely couple and their 73 years of marriage speaks for itself. Their mutual love and admiration was radiant. I will deeply miss you, Art...

Art at Camille Grantham Smith's funeral with cousins

Art was my cousin and such an important person to his New Mexico family. He came to work on my father's farm and ranch as a boy,and then returned with Marion to Carlsbad to train to fly during the war. He was always so attentive to my mother and delivered the eulogy at her funeral. The last time I saw him he attended the Grantham family reunion in Albuquerque in 2003. He will be sorely missed by all of us.

I was so sad to hear of Art's passing. Among their many other kindnesses, Art and Marion helped me with college after learning from my grandparents that I was working hard to attend a top school but struggling with the costs. Never mind that they had never met me(!).
After that I got to know Art, and even went to work one summer on the farm they owned in Virginia. I came to deeply respect and admire Art as a mentor, and I treasured the talks I had with him. As others have said, he was one of the wisest and kindest people I had ever met, but also very humble.
My family and I just visited Art and Marion while on vacation in Williamsburg about a month ago. It had been about 10 years since I had seen him and I'm so grateful I was able to spend time with him before he passed.
My condolences to his extended family and his many friends. Farewell to a great man who made a profound impact on so many people throughout his long life.

I was fortunate to be a member of Art's family. His wife was my aunt----and I spent many summers around the Carlsbad, N.M. area. In later years, we renewed friendships at a few family reunions. He was truly a brilliant, funny, wonderful man---and will be missed by so many. Love to the family, Camille Grantham Hall Carstens--Albuquerque, N.M.

I met Art in 2000 at my first 401st Bomb Group Reunion. I noted his enthusiasm for the group and his commitment. He later asked me to become the Group's Historian which I gladly agreed to. I have missed him from the last two reunions and will sadly miss him now but know that he is in a better place and among his friends. My heart goes out to the family and send my prayers to them.

I can't even begin to share my total respect and admiration for Art Seder. He was, by far, one of the most knowledgeable and generous people I have met, yet also gentle and humble by nature. Sincere condolences to his dear family. Jeannie Campbell
