Columbus GEDDIE Obituary
He was born in Norfolk, Va., on March 4, 1942, to the late Columbus A. Geddie Sr., and Ruth A. Mullen Geddie. He was a loving husband, father, brother, and friend. He was educated in both the Norfolk and Newport News Public School Systems. He graduated from George Washington Carver High School in 1962 and remained an active alumnus through the years.
Upon graduation from high school he joined the U.S. Marine Corps, proudly serving from 1962-1966. In 1967 he began working at Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co., where he worked as a first class machinist in X-43 until he retired as a master shipbuilder in 2007. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing and was an avid Washington Redskin Fan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Columbus A. Geddie Sr., and Ruth A. Mullen Geddie; brothers, Leo Maurice Geddie, Henry Geddie; and sister, Betty Risper.
He leaves to cherish his memories his devoted wife of 44 years, Roberta; sons, Christopher and Forrest Geddie of Newport News; one grandson, John Ruffin of Smithfield; brothers, Pernell Geddie (Rosemary) of Hampton, Willie Geddie of Hampton, Herbert Mullen (Alma) of Hampton; one brother-in-law, James Stephenson (Annis) of Medical Lake, Wash.; sisters, Ruth A. Garrett of Newport News, Suzette A. Powell of New York; sister-in-law, Vivian Stephenson of Hampton; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A celebration of life service will be held at noon Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2010, at Gethsemane Baptist Church, 3509 Chestnut Avenue, Newport News, with the Rev. Dwight S. Riddick Sr. officiating. Interment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens. Viewing will begin at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 4, at the funeral home and the family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. On Tuesday, Mr. Geddie will lie in state at the church two hours prior to service.

I worked with Geddie for several months before his retirement. I was just reading a book and it brought back memories of him telling me colorful stories about his time in the Marines. What a great guy to work with.
