Ethel PARKER Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Ethel Mae Parker, 90, native of Newark, N.J., longtime resident of Washington, D.C., and resident of Newport News, VA., was called home to be with the Lord on Aug. 29, 2010, at home surrounded by her loving family.
She was educated in Newark and D.C. Public Schools, earning a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Miner Teacher's College and a master's degree in Special Education from George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
Ethel Mae was married to the late Benjamin F. Parker. From this union, four children were born, Judith Ann, Dennis Joseph, Michael Francis and Nabeehah (Jeanne). Ethel Mae enjoyed helping "Parker" with his community projects, and also enjoyed a wide variety of music, art, flowers, travel, swimming, and -most of all- being with family, especially her grand and great-grandkids. She was a faithful member of St. Francis de Sales Church, Washington, D.C.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin F. Parker; and son, Michael F. Parker.
She leaves to cherish her memory her loving children, Judith P. Drew (Randy) of Newport News, Va., Dennis J. Parker (Luella) of Palo Alto, Calif.; and Nabeehah (Jeanne) Parker (Khalil) of Philadelphia, Pa.
Viewing will begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2010, at O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home, followed by visitation with the family from 6 to 7 p.m. A funeral Mass will be 11 a.m., Friday Sept. 3, 2010, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Washington, D.C. Interment will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Washington, D.C.
In lieu of flowers, that family requests that contributions be made to your local Hospice agency; or the charity of your choice.
O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home is honored to serve the Parker family. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Dear Judy and Randy,

I was sorry that I wasn't able to attend the wake for your mom. I was at the hospital with Dad. I met your mom and she was a special person. You have done all you could to care for her and now she's being cared for by the BEST. I'll remember her fondly.

May your memories be like a rainbow after the storm.

There are some many things that Aunt Ethel Mae taught me, too many to write in such a small space. But they helped mold me into the woman that I am now. I am so glad that she was a part of my life. My love and prayers are with all of you.

To Judy and the family:

Both Marjorie and I grieve with you during your time of bereavement. We, at this time, acknowledge the beautiful and timely management in the caring for your mother during her last days. Yours was a task only a loving daughter (and siblings) could accomplish. WELL DONE!!!! Again, you have our condolences.
